As winter draws to a close and the days get longer and warmer, there is a special season that begins, drawing families from their wintery hibernation. No - I'm not referring to spring, but the festive season of school and community fetes which erupt onto the social calendar like a handful of Mentos tossed into a Diet Coke.

For those living in the Western Suburbs, there are five fabulous fetes over five weekends – from perennial favourites to brand new events.

1. Wembley Downs District Fair
When: Saturday 27th October, from 8.30am to 3pm
Where: Luita Street Reserve, Wembley Downs

Still going strong after fifty years, the Wembley Downs District Fair brings together community and school groups from across the area, with traditional market stalls, rides and games for the kids, performances and entertainment and more. From the Men's Shed to Surf Lifesaving, you will find a wonderful representation of the entire district.

2. Wembley Primary School Fete
When: Saturday 10th November, 11am to 6pm
Where: 41 Grantham St, Wembley

The huge Wembley Primary School Fete only occurs once every four years, and it's back in 2018 with a range of traditional stalls plus rides, food, entertainment and silent disco. They are also offering a range of workshops that will entertain everyone from kids to grandparents and all money raised will be going towards the improving and extending the school playground.

3. Rosalie Primary School Fete
When: Saturday 17th November 10am to 3pm
Where: 101 Onslow Road, Shenton Park

The Fete has been a tradition at Rosalie Primary for more than 25 years. The 17th of November will mark a big day for the Shenton Park community as tens of stalls, and fun activities will crowd the school oval between 10 am and 3 pm. More than 50 parents are working on the plant stall, bringing back to life the old Rosalie nursery and filling it with gifts ideas for the Holidays.

The stage will feature music by Rosalie Students, a dance performance from Silhouette Dance Studio and a jam by a Rosalie dad and former Rosalie student who played at the Rosalie Fete 25 years ago and went on to start The Bank Holidays, an indie pop band with worldwide recognition. Foodies will be delighted by organic bacon and eggs, Mexican and pizza kiosks and Rosalie dad Galileo chef Angelo who will make fresh pasta with the kids.

When: Sunday 18th November, 9am to 5pm
Where: 58 Northwood Street, West Leederville

The aptly named Colour Carnival will have a central stage area where different events – from a watermelon eating contest to tug-of-war – will be hosted each hour. You can keep cool with a range of water activities towards the end of the day, and there will be plenty of stalls from the classes, carnival rides and entertainment. The school is raising money for a new outdoor play area.

5. Jolimont Primary School Twilight Fete
When: Saturday 1st December, 3pm to 7pm
Where: 657 Hay Street, Jolimont

This will be Jolimont's inaugural event, and finishing the Fete season with a beautiful twilight fete. You can expect to find a pop-up bar, gourmet and kid-friendly food options, handmade crafts and gifts, plenty of inflatables and games for the kids, market stalls, a mega-white elephant stall and animal-lovers will even find a special Pet Stall full of cute Christmas gifts for your four-legged friends.

The team of volunteers are sourcing some amazing prizes for the silent auction and raffle, and the School of Rock and buskers from the school will entertain fete-goers as the sun sets.
