There will be no whining about these wines
Western Australia is lucky to have a few wine regions where the perfect set of circumstances have combined to allow winemakers to create some incredible wines. We have a unique geology, geography and maritime climate which has helped to establish Margaret River and The Swan Valley as producers of renowned and exquisite wine.

I have selected what I believe to be the five best white wines from Western Australia that are delicious and affordable.

Winery: Capel Vale
Variety: Semillon/Sauvignon Blanc
Year: 2011
Alcohol content: 12.5%
Produced in: Pemberton
Price: $24.00
Description: This is probably my favourite white wine, or is at least in the top two. It is perfectly balanced which means that it goes with anything, and I drink it through winter as well as summer. It is crisp and herbaceous, and tastes a little of passionfruit. I love that this wine is so smooth and mild. It is also a good gift as you can be sure that if the recipient drinks white wine, then they will like this.

Winery: Devil's Lair
Variety: Dance with the Devil (Sauvignon Blanc/Chenin Blanc)
Year: 2011
Alcohol content: 13.5%
Produced in: Margaret River
Price: $25.00
Description: This is a beautiful wine for summer, as it is tropical and vibrant. It has a strong and racy aftertaste due to the Chenin Blanc, and would be perfectly paired with seafood and salads.

Winery: Clownfish
Variety: Chardonnay
Year: 2011
Alcohol content: 12.5%
Produced in: Cowaramup
Price: $18.00
Description: Clownfish is a well known winery, and for good reason. This chardonnay tastes of pear and citrus and nectarine and all things yummy. It does have a distinct lemony aftertaste, but it is also a little buttery which means that it goes down nice and smooth. This is another great summer wine that is perfect for a bbq.

Winery: Sittela
Variety: Silk (Blend of Verdelho/Chardonnay/Chenin Blanc)
Year: 2010
Alcohol content: 13%
Produced in: Herne Hill
Price: $18.00
Description: Aptly named 'Silk' as it is smooth as silk. It will slide down your throat with no trouble at all, and will leave you tasting citrus, tropical fruit and soft melon flavours. This wine is full flavoured and crisp, and is also very aromatic. Lovely.

Winery: Pierro
Variety: Chenin Blanc/Riesling/Sauvignon Blanc
Year: 2011
Alcohol content: 12.5%
Produced in: Cowaramup
Price: $30.00
Description: This is a rather unusual blend of varieties, but it just works somehow. It is light and delicate, with a nice fresh and dry aftertaste. This wine would be a great accompaniment to any kind of Asian cuisine. Be sure to take a bottle along to your next dinner at a Thai restaurant - your friends will be well and truly spoilt!

Enjoy!
