The pleasures of seeking op shop treasures
Op shops have become the "go-to" place for cool or quirky retro and vintage outfits, accessories, and household bric-a-brac. Whether you're into sustainable living or just following the latest trends, thrift shops are a goldmine of one-of-a-kind flowing dresses, loud shirts, and faded denim. You never know what treasures you may find.
Brisbane's West End has a number of thrift shops, but these are my "Top 3" for quintessential vintage wares:
VINTAGE REVIVAL BY LIFELINE
108 Boundary Street (corner Russell St) - new location as of Oct 2021 Tel: 0419884436 Website: unitingcareqld.com.au/lifeline
What to expect: Two floors of men's and women's clothing, shoes, jewellery, pot plants, books, floral teacup trios, crocheted throws, embroidered tablecloths, 1960s-70s belts, ties, and bags, kitsch bric-a-brac, novels and non-fiction books in good to excellent condition, framed pictures, depression glass, board games, and toys.
What to expect: A traditional thrift store filled to the rafters with all manner of goodies. You'll find manchester and household linen, hand-embroidered handkerchiefs and serviettes, haberdashery, framed art, costume jewellery, and old postcards. The stock changes frequently so you may find a set of bakelite-handled knives one day and a funky lime green '60s crimplene dress on another.
381 Montague Road, West End Tel: 3844 0459 Website: vinnies.org.au
What to expect: A bright and spacious store that sells everything from comics to crystal dishes to large furniture. The store has a dedicated retro section with racks of dresses, tops, bottoms, jackets, kitchenware, collectibles, tablecloths, old-fashioned dolls, and bric-a-brac.
Vinnie's has a well-stocked section dedicated to Retro and Alternative items.
