So you're a visiting vegetarian or vegan from interstate or even overseas. You've heard about what a wonderful vegan world it is in Melbourne. With limited time and geography knowledge, you wonder - what are the VeggieTop Five?

Eating out in Melbourne has become easier for vegans. There are many vegetarian places to eat, and increasingly vegetarian friendly places to try. I've also found an increased awareness in 'regular' restaurants, although I would recommend calling ahead to ask.

So my very first place to visit would be Brunswick Street, the home of the legendary Veggie Bar . Just because it is iconic and a pioneer as vegetarian establishment, and the food is still pretty good too. Always bustling with all types of clientele, and still good value.

While you digest your feast, take a walk down Brunswick Street. There are a few more vegetarian places such as Madame K's ,which you could look at or you could work up an appetite while you make your way towards Smith Street, running parallel.

In Smith Street you could do a little shopping at Vegan Wares , which is worth a visit. Here you will find a range of vegan shoes and accessories. The service is exceptional, and the range is good, they will even make custom shoes should you want.

So now you have your walking boots on head on up to Las Vegan. Just the name makes me smile. Are you vegan? You can have anything, anything on offer! I know, exciting hey? They do calzones, pizza, burgers, wraps and the plenty of cakes. If you've already eaten at the Vegie Bar today, perhaps a brownie, cupcake or vanilla slice (yes, you can have it) will hit the spot.

Trippy Taco is a a short trip up to Getrude Street and an absolute must if you like Mexican. They do vegan cheese when requested and there is such a huge range in this vegetarian restaurant. Everyone I have ever discussed this with – absolutely loves it! You could wash it all down with a Mexican beer too.

Smith Streets and Brunswick Streets are lots of fun to explore but while you're here and a little further afield is the Moroccan Soup Bar . If you can get in - this place is an experience, and offers a fully vegetarian menu with vegans catered for. The banquet is my recommendation, you can trust you will have an interesting tasty meal.

You may need more than one day, but as all of these places are around the same area you will see how fantastic Melbourne is without the meat.
