In the 1840s, Caledonians started arriving in town for the gold rush and, as a result, a Scottish history came into being.
Maclean , situated within the Clarence Valley approximately 650 kilometres north of Sydney, has since been known as the Scottish town of Australia.
[SECTION]Tartan power poles[/SECTION]
Along its streets are hundreds of power poles painted in kilt colours. These iconic
tartan poles can be seen all the way from Ferry Park to Harwood Bridge. They were first instigated in 2000 when the Olympic Torch was to be carried through Maclean. Then, due to favourable comments and public demand, painting of the poles continued.
For further insight into the town's history, do visit the
bicentennial museum at the corner of Wharf and Grafton Streets. There are a number of historic buildings to discover too as you're wandering around town.

The
Scottish shop on River Street is well worth a visit. Feel free to drop in for a chat about those tartan power poles if you happen to have any questions. Besides providing local tourism advice, the trained volunteer staff also sell Scottish memorabilia and souvenirs.
[SECTION]Lookout[/SECTION]
Once you've finished exploring the town centre, head to the
lookout via Wharf Street and Lookout Road for beautiful views of Maclean and its surrounds. The one thing that really caught my eye was the fields of sugarcane which aren't a common sight in South Australia. The lookout also has picnic tables if you'd like to enjoy morning tea or lunch.
[SECTION]Grafton[/SECTION]
Just 40 minutes drive southwest is Grafton where you'll find a unique piece of Australian architecture. The 1915
bendy bridge spans the Clarence River and can be experienced by walking across. While above caters for those in their vehicles, beneath is a train line with walkways on both sides. So, why is the bridge called 'bendy'? I'll let you answer that for yourself when you visit.
