If you are a fan of Hawaii Five-0 on television, you will be aware of the island of Oahu, Hawaii. This show gives you small glimpses into this amazing island, the beauty, the lifestyle and the people. If you are looking for some place different to go maybe this is the place for you.

You can hop on a Hawaiian Airlines flight out of Brisbane and in 9.5 hours be in the exotic, tropical location of Honolulu, Oahu . And they certainly know how to show you a good time. While many other airlines are downscaling their services, making you buy everything including an app to watch movies, it is a real treat to be served a glass of wine, to be able to watch a movie without having to do it on your phone, and have a meal as well.

Once you land, you are on a historical landmark that is spellbinding. The musical Hawaiian melodies that play throughout the airport have such a flowing beauty it really gets you into the vibe of the island.

Don't forget to get yourself an authentic Hawaiian shirt, drink some Mai Tai's and go to a Laua. Go snorkeling in the azure colored bays. Take a drive around the island and go up the coast for a snack from one of the iconic shrimp trucks.

Pearl Harbour is a must see, just for the sheer scale of historical content. And you get to board the USS Missouri, the battleship where the truce signing took place at the end of World War ll. Everything else is a museum dedicated to this time in history. You can tour the USS Bowfin submarine and wonder how anyone could live for 90 days in a small enclosed space with over 90 others, under the sea.

A trip to Waikiki beach and area adjacent to the city of Honolulu will give you a moment to pause. You may want to sit for a while, people watching on this beach. Maybe you will sit on a lanai and have a drink or dinner. Or perhaps, you can peruse your way through the hundreds of shops. And if you travel a little farther you come to the Honolulu Zoo, a nice slow paced walk full of intriguing creatures.

One evening during sunset on the patio of the Westin Moana Surfrider, a beautiful, young hula dancer, flowed with the grace and elegance of slow moving water to the songs of the gentlemen accompanying her, one on guitar and the other playing a ukele. The hypnotic quality and gentle melodies were mesmerizing and a must see for sure.

If you are a surfer you are probably aware of the Pipeline beach, renowned for its surfing and wave heights. You can however, just walk it and marvel at the splendor of the beauty. The north coast is also home to turtles, and to come by them sleeping on the beach is stellar.

There are several hikes full of amazing scenery throughout the center. The east coast is a splendour of mountains jutting out of the water along the shoreline. The Pill Box hike is worth the climb, not only to see the left over gun turrets but to gaze at the view. The beaches and surrounding coastline of Kailua is again spectacular.

Yokohama Bay on the West coast has less tourists and is home to satellite tracking radar installations.

The US dollar is high, there are many people and there is traffic. But if you can get past this you will enjoy. We rented a 3 bedroom Airbnb house, and made our own meals.

Go for a look at Oahu, try it on and see if you like it. Who knows, you may even run into Steve McGarrett, alias Alex O'Loughlin.
