Williamstown is not only a blissful Barossa township but also the ideal base for exploring conservation parks and reservoir reserves.

Hale Conservation Park comes alive in spring when flowers are plentiful and the creek has some water. Starting at Gate 1 on Warren Road, its moderate four-kilometre circuit hike will lead you past a small waterfall (if there's been recent rain), mica diggings and a lookout with great views. You'll see termite mounds, echidna scratchings and large tree stumps along the way too.

For those interested in steeper terrain, you'd love walking the Warren Tower Hike trail which traverses through Warren Conservation Park as well as a native forest reserve. I've done this walk many times and always enjoyed the views at the fire lookout tower. Seeing the Barossa and South Para landscape from this high point is simply magnificent.

Also a stone's throw away are the Warren and South Para Reservoir Reserves. At Warren , you'll get to see a 17-metre dam wall that was built during World War I. The nearby valve house has a time capsule cast into its door lintel. This historic cache contains a bottle of wine, some coins and a newspaper for the benefit of future generations.

The South Para reservoir, on the other hand, was constructed after World War II by mainly European immigrants, prison inmates and homeless men. It is South Australia's second-largest reservoir with a capacity of more than 22,000 Olympic swimming pools. You are welcome to kayak across the majority of the reservoir's body of water.

Last but not least, why not go for a wander across the Whispering Wall and discover what's so special about it! I'm sure many of us already know, but you'll be surprised at the number of South Australians who have yet to visit this popular tourist destination. I won't give too much away here except to say that your whispered conversations may no longer be a secret anymore after visiting the Barossa reservoir.
