While Sunshine may have a bit of a bad rep in the past, it's good to remember that so did Port Melbourne and Williamstown not all that long ago. Certainly many of those who live in Sunshine have a pretty positive view. Here are some good reasons why you might like to visit:

The Cinemas

There's a huge multiplex of Village cinemas (17 traditional and 3 gold class) so whatever you want to see, it's likely to be available. There's plenty of parking around the cinemas (a lot of it free) and a huge array of places to eat in the town centre, marketplace and plaza ranging through Vietnamese, Afghan, Syrian, Italian, Turkish cuisines and more. There's also a games arcade in the cinema to keep the kids entertained.

Parks

You're not going to stumble upon Buckingham Reserve by accident but should you go to the effort of finding it - tucked away in the middle of an industrial heartland - you'll be quite amazed by this little piece of (urban) country life. The reserve is bordered by Kororoit Creek and while the creek is not as pristine as a country version and its banks are still in the process of being beautified, it's still an amazingly peaceful, tree filled environment for a stroll or a picnic. Within the reserve there's also a kids playground, shelters, bbqs, toilets and walking tracks.

There are quite a few more parks in Sunshine than you might imagine.

Activities

Aside from the traditional ones such as swimming and roller skating , there are several go-kart tracks. Fun City Entertainment Complex has Formula E Indoor Go-Karting as well as laser tag, rock climbing and other activities. There's also Ace Karts which offers outdoor go-karting, or you might like to try trampolining at 79JumpStreet .

Shopping

Sunshine boasts a wide range of food from almost the four corners of the earth. In particular, you can find loads of fresh produce and Asian and African groceries. Sunshine Plaza and Sunshine Marketplace host a wide range of shops plus Vinnies has a large store in Sunshine, Treasurehunters Clearance Warehouse offers food, homewares, bathroom and cleaning products, giftware and more, Babymode has everything you need for your baby and Paul's Warehouse has discounted sporting gear.

Cafes and Restaurants

We're mostly not talking fine dining here but rather cheap and delicious. With around 40 cafes and restaurants the problem is really which to choose. Vietnamese, Chinese, Japanese, Greek, African, Polish, Italian, Turkish? Certainly the range of Vietnamese eateries could rival Richmond and Footscray plus it's way easier to park in Sunshine.

Sunshine was named after the Sunshine Harvester Works which was once the largest manufacturing company in Australia. A few remnants of its history remain, such as the gates below.

As far as the future goes, Sunshine station has had a major upgrade, the shopping centre is in the middle of a building frenzy and the council has plans for the revitalisation of the town centre. For more good reasons to visit see here for information on fun local events such as the Sunshine Street Market, Sunshine Short Film Festival and Sunshine Pho Fever.
