For the first time ever, I've just spent one week in Lorne. I have come to the conclusion that this haven, which is a very comfortable 2 hour drive from Melbourne, is by far a better family holiday destination than anywhere on the Mornington Peninsula. Here's why.

The Beaches - Loutit Bay - It's just beautiful, and you won't get hit by a jet ski or speed boat.

There is room for everyone on the sand. The beach goes for as long as the eye can see. The Lorne Surf Life Saving Club diligently patrols the beach area in front of the town centre. It's where beautiful open grassed areas and playgrounds meet the sand. The public amenities are clean and modern. The whole place is very clean, extremely well maintained, child-friendly and happy.

Swings and trampolines at the Lorne Sea Baths and cool cafe's line the foreshore. The swim area is protected by bushland. This is where the Pier to Pub open water swim race takes place each year. I counted at least 25 swimmers taking on the course each morning. A wonderful sight.

The Restaurants - Top quality. Not just a pub or fish & chip shop to choose from. From fine dining to casual cafe fair. There's something for everyone and the prices are reasonable for this time of year. There are over 28 places to eat in this town. All with a unique offering. Just sensational for such a small place. Where did we dine?

Lorne Hotel - Great pub menu. Great staff. Guess what? Kids are welcome. Child-friendly with a massive kids playroom. At 5.30pm every day they hold a kids fun zone with clowns, DJ's, games and dancing on the outdoor decking. Kids had a ball.

Mexican Republic mixes it with any city Mexican restaurant. Great food, hot sauces, sangria by the jug and beer. We had a 10 month baby with us. The staff were so helpful and not worried about the mess we caused. Just wonderful.

Lorne Beach Pavilion Right on the sand. Breakfast, lunch or dinner. I had the best fish and chips ever. Money can't buy this location. Truly beautiful. After a morning walk or run, pop into the Pavilion for a coffee and grab a seat facing the ocean. Watch the kids learning to surf with an instructor. Fabulous.

Chopstix Lorne is a really cool noodle bar. The queue to take orders for dinner starts at around 5pm, so be prepared to line up. It moves extremely fast so you'll have your food in no time. Watch the chefs do their thing. Fresh, hot and substantial.

Lorne feels safe and friendly. Police constantly patrol the main street. The locals, the council and the business owners seem to have really worked hard to make Lorne a great family destination. In my opinion, they have succeeded.

I'm booking my next summer holiday in Lorne for two weeks this time.

I might see you there.
