Highlights of What's On in Adelaide in May
In the past, people have often referred to South Australia's 'mad March', but there's good reason to call this month 'mad May'. May is the month to celebrate our history, and both the History Trust of South Australia and the National Trust SA have pulled out all stops for
South Australia's History Festival .
There are fun things to do in Adelaide and all around the state in May, with 600 events that will appeal to nearly everyone. Choose from 14
awesome adventures in South Australia . Kick back and
enjoy chocolate coated history . Take time out for
Kapunda's heritage attractions and
a swap meet , or head south of Adelaide to
discover the secrets of Lizard Lodge .
The only difficult part is deciding how many events that you can squeeze in a day.
What's On in Adelaide - Free Things to Do in May
There are many good reasons to get out in May, either
doing active sports or improving your knowledge
indoors with a drink (or two). You can safely bet that half of Adelaide will be heading to the
Clare Valley Gourmet Weekend for wonderful wine and fine food from May 19-22 though.
If you're staying behind in Adelaide, catch the last days of the State Library SA's free
Play Exhibition of toys and games , Take a peek inside Government House on
the free Open Day , or get closer to nature at Belair National Park
on a free guided walk .
If you're quick you can still catch
free Tasting Australia events and
the Urban Pantry in the Mall, otherwise be generous and
feed the butterflies instead.
Zany Adelaide artist Andrew Baines is once again holding
one of his surreal photo shoots on the sea front at Largs Bay on May 28 at 9am. Join with hundreds of people lined up on the beach to draw attention to our oceans being suffocated by micro-plastics. Attire: dark suits, or all dark attire (long sleeve shirts & long pants), and black top hats (can be obtained from party hire & sales shops, costume shops, craft shops). Come along and help improve our marine ecology!
When the freezing frost and relentless rain make you wish summer was back already, take a
lingering look at a tropical paradise , before you're tempted to email your travel agent.
Not Free, but Fun Things to Do in Adelaide
The first weekend of May brings more markets, with both the
Bowerbird Design market and a
photographic market . Or get some culture in you at the
Kodomo No Hi Japanese festival or at a
performance of Henry V .
Mothers Day can be a challenge - especially if you forgot to book somewhere in advance. Perhaps meet
Mum for breakfast , go all the way with a
Mothers Day high tea , or try one of these mostly
free things to do for Mothers Day . If all else fails, Mum would love to go browsing at the
Upmarket Unley Market .
There's plenty of fun things to do on Yorke Peninsula for the
Kernewek Lowender Cornish festival , and the
Copper Coast ghost tours are always top attractions. Sometimes the traffic near
Port Wakefield can be just too much: going to the
Bring it On musical or
riding a Rolls Royce will be much more restful.
Other Exciting Things to See and Do in Adelaide
Our restaurant recommendations this month include
La Provence French restaurant and the
In 'n' Out BBQ restaurant , while south of Adelaide the food is fine at
Dee Dees Cafe .
We've been finding free things to do in green spaces this month and can highly recommend
Blackwood Hill Reserve for mountain biking, hiking, or just walking the dog. Just down the road there's
plenty to see and do in Coromandel Valley while Barry has sorted the
best walks in Morialta Conservation Park for you.
Families with kids will find this
guide to playgrounds in the northern suburbs helpful.
On a rainy day why not browse old photos
showing a history of protests in Adelaide ? I know where our photography fan Paula McManus will be though -
foraging for fungi in a foggy forest.
