Highlights of What's On in Adelaide in July
While we haven't seen much rain yet, it's going to be easy to beat the winter blues with a load of fun things to do in Adelaide and the suburbs during July. Port Adelaide is becoming an unlikely winter wonderworld with an outdoor ice skating rink for Winterfest at Hart's Mill . And for those of us who can't skate, there will be flavoursome food and wine and free live entertainment to coax us to visit.

The Umbrella Winter City Sounds music festival kicks off in July too, with events showcasing a variety of musical genres at some pretty iconic locations. Dark Matter at Z Ward Asylum features live acts, video projections, visual exhibitions, cell installations, DJ's, booze, wine and soup, while legendary UK indie band The Wedding Present are at The Jade , or find one of several free things to do for the Umbrella festival.

For something quite different, join surreal artist Andrew Baines on a Walk for Peace and another of his wacky photo shoots. It takes place at Henley Beach on July 23, with a walk to Grange jetty and back.

What's On in Adelaide - Free Things to Do in July
Free guided walks are a popular thing at this time of year, and this month you can take one in Belair National Park and another in the Adelaide parklands .

Indoor markets under cover are just the thing in winter - check out the latest twilight market at Market Shed on Holland , or satisfy your cheese fetish at Cheeseaholics Festival on July 23 in Adelaide's trendiest markets at Plant 4 in Bowden.

Otherwise head to Mount Barker in the Adelaide Hills for the indoor Red Robin Market . Mount Barker is also home to the South Coast Wine Train , a chance to go tasting in real style.

The school holidays are back again and from July 10-20 Playford Council has come to the rescue with free school holiday activities while the Salisbury school holiday program only costs $5. There are free school holiday activities at Adelaide Central Market too - very handy if you're shopping there.

The French love their (free) Bastille Day celebrations , while here in Adelaide we prefer to quietly enjoy our achievements at the new free Centre of Democracy on North Terrace.

Not Free, but Fun Things to Do in Adelaide
There's competition for Port Adelaide's Winterfest down at the Bay, which has created their own Winter Wonderland with an ice skating rink on the beachfront. Or you can compromise with Wonderful Winter at Henley Square Pavilion. It's all great fun for kids during the school holidays.

Up at Gawler find your way with words at the Adelaide Plains Festival of Words at the end of the month, get cuddly with a bunny at a free rabbit show , or check out these eco friendly events in Adelaide.

Other Exciting Things to See and Do in Adelaide
The best time to visit the Flinders Ranges and mid North of South Australia is during the cool weather, and our writers have been doing just that. It's two years since I looked at Peterborough attractions and the town is a lot more active now. Writer Steve Hudson recently followed the Peterborough Heritage Walk and checks out some off the rails accommodation in Peterborough.

In 2015 I suggested that Terowie is one of the ghost towns of Australia , and Steve's recent look at Terowie seems to confirm my impression. Nearby Hallett doesn't qualify yet as a ghost town, but I enjoyed following the story of Hallett's historical walk - these old communities have so much character.

Back in Adelaide check out the Spud Shop for a hearty winter warming meal, or kick back at Kik Coffee in Light Square while you discover how to get the most out of Weekend Notes .
