Highlights of What's On in Adelaide in August
August is the month to celebrate art in Adelaide, and throughout the month the
SALA Festival brings us loads of fun things to do with art all around South Australia. Walking tours and workshops,
art exhibitions and gala opening nights, plus fun for kids too - the world is your oyster with the huge number of events and free things to do in this year's program.
South of Adelaide join in the excitement at the
Willunga Almond Blossom Festival bringing cheer at the beginning of August, but if the weather turns bad you still have other options indoors: the
Australian Marmalade Festival is an opportunity to creatively use your surplus oranges, and produce your own winning marmalade.
Wet weather is the perfect time for nature play, and a range of
new nature playgrounds will keep your (grand) children happy as mudlarks.
What's On in Adelaide - Free Things to Do in August
The first weekend of August is super for shopping at markets in Adelaide. Choose from the
Round She Goes preloved fashion markets,
Gathered Market at Queens Theatre in the city, or the
Magill Sunrise Market for the earlybirds.
The ever popular
City East Markets on Flinders Street are back every weekend, with the added attraction of themed weekends this month including Mythical Beasts Adelaide markets and Bling Bling Jewellery and Fashion Market. Bookworms should head out to Fullarton for the
Adelaide Secondhand Booksellers Fair .
While you're in the city don't miss the colourful costumes for
International Cosplay Day on August 5. The following weekend
Carrick Hill will burst into colour for the
Camellias South Australia Annual Show , another of the free things to do in August.
The South Australian Museum is holding its free
Science Centre Open Day on August 19, but be aware the tours are not open to young children.
Alternatively join in the
Vegan affair at Serafino Wines - a one-day festival celebrating all facets of veganism. Carnivores need to wait until the next weekend for
The Hot Breakfast Club from Splash Adelaide in Victoria Square.
Not Free, but Fun Things to Do in Adelaide
Science Alive at Adelaide Showground on August 5-6 is full of hands on interactive fun things to do for all the family. Who said learning has to be hard?
Escape the city to
Mannum on the Murray where you can join in the fantasy fun at the
Game Obsession Expo on August 6. If you're quick you will be back in time for another river cruise -
Floating Melodies on the River Torrens is a cool way to enjoy great jazz music and hot foods.
Other Exciting Things to See and Do in Adelaide
August is a great time to see the sights of South Australia, and we've been busy ferreting out fun things to do all over the state. Head to the Beautiful Flinders Ranges to
visit a ghost town , follow a long forgotten railway line to find the dusty remains of
abandoned railway stations and the communities that they serviced. Or wander and wonder at
seven special spots on the Yorke Peninsula , including one where the historic Nelcebee,
Australia's oldest powered ship once visited.
Go
canoeing on the River Murray , and stay overnight to be amazed at the stunning skies seen at the
Dark Sky Reserve . Other scenic places to visit in August include
Kenneth Stirling Conservation Park and
Myponga Reservoir Lookout .
There are some everyday things that we take for granted because they are always there when we want them. The Adelaide parklands are one of these things. We're so used to being able to walk the dog in the parklands, or go to a fair, attend a wedding, play sport, or eat lunch in their gardens. For years heritage advocates have been trying to get the Adelaide parklands heritage listed, and the government is now inviting YOU to
have your say on the parklands . Please take a minute to complete the survey, and do your bit to keep the parklands for the community!
