Perfecting New Year's Eve, whether it be on a budget or as a splurge, appears on the world-wide 'to do' list for people who enjoy a good time; essentially – everyone! No-one likes to be let down by sub-par food and drink, bad company, terrible view or a lousy party. For as the old adage goes; the way you spend New Years Eve will determine how you spend the following year.

Now personally I have had many fantastic New Year's Eves. And the majority of them I haven't had a plan till that very night. However with so many options in Sydney it pays to at least be aware of what they are so you can make an informed decision.

1) House Parties – This can often be the most affordable and enjoyable option particularly if you're on a budget and have a balcony or backyard to entertain. If you are the host; make a little bit of effort. The success of the evening can be enhanced by small things such as preparing a playlist ahead of time, festive decoration (think tea-light candles, hanging baubles from the ceiling, maybe a bit of frivolous entertainment such as a piñata). Deviating from the standard 'beer and wine' will change the tone of the evening – punch is inexpensive to make and can enhance a cheap bottle of wine; whilst plastic cocktail glasses can be found at any budget variety shop to lend a festive feel to the night.

2) Picnics – The day will be long if you want a prime position with many keen viewers claiming positions from the early hours of the morning. Along with the standard drinks and snacks take a few cushions, lots of water, sunscreen and mozzie repellent. These little suckers love to invade during summer and nobody will feel particularly festive if they're itching all over! Portable speakers with an iPod will also go down a treat however respect your fellow park-dwellers with volume levels. The list of vantage points that offer views of the harbour and firework displays can be found here – please note that some locations do charge a fee and have restrictions on alcohol.

3) Dining – many iconic Sydney harbour restaurants are offering New Years Eve packages and I wouldn't hesitate in investigating these as soon as you can; as some of the more prestigious and well-located venues are already booked up. Some suggestions (that currently still have availability) include O Bar & Dining (360 degree views of the city from Level 47 Australia Square) from $320 per person, Waterfront Restaurant at The Rocks – 4 courses from $480 per person, Sebel Pier One from $369 per person and the Harbour Rocks Hotel from $299 per person.

4) Cruises - If cruising is your thing several cruise options are available for individuals and smaller groups. The Starship is at the lower end of the price bracket starting from $595 per person whilst the Showboat will set you back $1000 per person (both inclusive of full drink and food packages for 6 hours). Positive point; the packages are fully inclusive. For 6 hours. Downside; if you get tired and want to go home well you're stuck on a boat. For 6 hours.

5) Outdoor sky-high! If you are seeking a unique experience away from the masses; The #12am_skywalk ">Sydney Skywalk is offering a midnight walk around the outside of one of Sydney's most iconic buildings during the fireworks display. You and a handful of others will be the only people in the Sydney outdoor air elevated 268m above ground level. Numbers are extremely limited so do not delay if you want to ring in the New Year with this experience ($350.00)

So no matter your budget there are many options to ensure your new year commences with a night to remember as we move onwards & upwards to a happy 2013!
