May is the month of Mother's Day, and May is also the month where the city of Sydney comes alive with arts and entertainment. Following on from the top things to do in April, here are the top events in Sydney for May 2012.
Mother's Day Special
There are a number of events that will ensure that this special someone is not forgotten about. The Mothers Day Classic is on yet again at The Domain and Parramatta. Your choice from the 4km or 8km run or walk in order to raise much needed funds towards breast cancer research. The Entertainment Quarter at Moore Park is also hosting the Mother's Day Royal Picnic on the very same day. Wine marquees and pampering is the order of the day with live entertainment, and best of all free entry is provided -however the organisers are hoping to raise funds for the Royal Women's Hospital. The children will enjoy face paintings and rides. There is also Fashion Weekend at the Royal Hall of Industries and if your mum is into theatre, then the 7 Soprano's Mother's Day Concert at the City Recital Hall might be up her alley.
The Riverside Theatre is also host to Biddies, a comedy act with five women, as well as Let the Sunshine which is all about a couple opting towards a sea change to Noosa. A mix between Romeo and Juliet and Meet The Parents. If you have children; then Music for Tutus at the Sydney Opera House is also on. Otherwise for music that is more upbeat, the Utopia Music Festival at the Sydney Showgrounds at Sydney Olympic Park could be worthy of your consideration.
I Want to See Some Art
Having been recognised for his social art by an MCA curator, Liam Benson is bringing his art to Rozelle from the 2nd of May to the 2nd of June. His exhibition called Motherland is his social and political commentary on identity and being masculine.
If fashion is your thing, then Fashion Weekend is for you. Held at the Royal Hall of Industries, there are various packages available. The ultimate level is a VIP package that does not come cheap at $95 - but you get the best seats at the catwalk events with goodie bags and your own private bathroom. Packages start from $20 and you get access to designer clothing at 70% off the recommended retail price. A beauty hub for pampering is also available, depending on the level of ticket purchased. Different inclusions come with different packages. On from the 10th to the 13th of May.
I am an Inner City Foodie
You are in luck as the Pyrmont Festival is held in May. This is where Pyrmont and Mudgee meet and become friends for 10 days. Pyrmont's top chefs and Mudgees best wine producers combine. Enjoy your choice from wine appreciation, wine and food matching and cheese master classes. Pirrama Park will come alive on the 20th of May with wine tastings. An art prize is also available.
I like Alice in Wonderland
The Mad Hatters Tea Party in Richmond is also being held this May. Hosted by a couple of Sydney's popular magicians, with an Alice in Wonderland inspired theme as part of Australia's Biggest Morning Tea for the Cancer Council.
Finally, are there any free outdoor events in Sydney in May that are put on for any Sydneysider who wants to have a good time?
Yes there is. Many of us Sydneysiders are so looking forward to Vivid Sydney coming up from the 25 May. Be prepared to spend a beautiful night out in glorious Sydney, ideally around the Circular Quay area where many of Sydney's top landmarks, such as Customs House and the Sydney Opera House come to life.
Have a fantastic May Sydney, and watch this space for June 2012.
