Top Sydney Arts and Cultural Events in February 2013

It's all great Sydney. There are some top activities to relish in seeing out the final month of summer. 2013 is the year of the snake according to the Chinese zodiac, and is also the year of colour, music and charm judging by the top events on offer.

Happy February Sydney, and of course 'Happy Chinese New Year', which brings us to the following...

Bring in the year of the snake...

The Chinese New Year Festival is on. Festivities begin in the city, from the 8th to the 24th of February, with a variety of different markets and entertainment events. Tours and exhibitions will also be happening, and best of all many of them are free. The actual Chinese New Year Parade (Twilight Parade) is on the 17th of February. On the following weekend, Darling Harbour will play host to the dragon boat races. Further information can be found by clicking here .

Other Chinese New Year festivities in Sydney include the Bankstown Lunar New Year Festival, and the Lunar New Year Twilight Festival 2013 in Parramatta. Bankstown's festivities will be held from 10am on Saturday the 9th of February, where activities include lion and dragon dances. Lucky envelopes will also be given out by the God of good fortune. In Parramatta, Church Street Mall will be transformed with lion dances and firecrackers, plus there will be many great activities for adults and kids alike - learn how to write your name in Chinese calligraphy, as well as the art of origami and get real up close and personal with a few snakes. Red lucky envelopes will also be handed out, and you can get your fortune read.

Colour my world and keep me fit...

The Swisse Color Run 2013 is on at Sydney Olympic Park on the 10th of February. Get sprayed with colour and run (or walk) 5kms for a good cause. Proceeds go to HeartKids. Suitable for all fitness levels and a 'finish festival' zone is included. Most importantly there will be an area where you can clean yourself off at the end of the race.

Did I hear "Happy Mardi Gras" somewhere...

Yes, you most certainly did. The Mardi Gras season is upon us, and it's the 35th anniversary of all things queer. Traditional parties such as the Pool Party at The Ivy will also be on show, as well as something cool at the Royal Botanical Gardens. The Fair Day will also be on again at Victoria Park, and tug-o-war events will also be held. There is a museum of all things Mardi Gras opening up in Darlinghurst to celebrate Mardi Gras season too. Of course the Dykes on Bikes will make another kickstart appearance at the iconic and popular Mardi Gras parade, of which will be held on the first Saturday of March. I want pub entertainment with fits of laughter...

Another season of Not Quite Cabaret at The Exchange Hotel in Balmain is about to start. A series of six to eight different skits will be presented at each and every Thursday night interval on selected dates. Not Quite Cabaret starts on the 28th of February. The plays must entertain, and they must comprise of comedy. In other words, you're guaranteed some laughs. Further information on this event can be found by clicking here .
