The weather in Melbourne is not looking too good this weekend. But fear not nasty weather does not necessarily mean a boring weekend at home, stuck inside with the kids. There are plenty of fun things you can do around Melbourne that are all indoors. Here are just a few examples:

The Australian Centre for the Moving Image (ACMI), which is located in Federation Square, is a great place to spend a rainy day. With two free exhibits, a room full of video games and a free animation activity on offer, ACMI will keep you and the kids entertained for hours while you wait out the winter storms. There are also two cinemas at ACMI which screen everything from the latest Hollywood blockbusters to rare independent films.

The National Gallery of Victoria (NGV), which is situated in the heart of Melbourne's Arts Precinct, is another great place to explore when the weather outside is less than perfect. They currently have six free exhibits on display which feature everything from contemporary Australian art to European masterpieces. There's even a special kids space inside the NGV where kids of all ages get to hop aboard a magnificent pirate and explore the seven seas.

If art galleries and museums bore you to tears, then why not give rock climbing a go this weekend? There's an indoor climbing centre in the city called 'Hardrock'. It's located at 501 Swanston Street, Melbourne. Whether you're a beginner or an experienced climber, I guarantee you will have fun. The cost of entry is $30 for an adult, $28 for a tertiary student, $19 for a school student, $20 for a parent and a single child (under 11 years of age) and $14 for an additional child. The cost of admission is fair I think since it includes equipment hire and a full day of unlimited climbing.

If you're like me and heights make you dizzy, then take either the number 96 or 112 tram to Clarendon Street and head to DFO South Wharf for a little retail therapy. With hundreds of stores at up to 70% off, you will be kept occupied for hours on end exploring DFO's massive underground complex.

These are just some of the things you can do around Melbourne when it's raining cats and dogs outside. Other indoor activities include the Melbourne Aquarium, Crown Casino and Infinity. The options are endless so rain, rain, don't go away. Please feel free to stay.
