The best playgrounds are those which children of all ages right up to adults can enjoy. All across WA playground construction is getting more and more bold and has left us with some fantastic places which make plenty of adults, myself included, envious.

But where are the best? And what makes a playground great? If you have a favourite post in the comments below. I have limited it to one playground per city/town, as Perth itself has many many awesome and varied playgrounds, many of which have been reviewed here .

Get ready to take your play-grounding to the next level.

Heathcote Reserve, Applecross
This one brings out the kid in everyone. The expansive nautical playground sits overlooking the Swan River, with views to the CBD in the distance, and is quite simply the best playground in Perth.

There are many bridges, platforms, hidden slides and tunnels, climbing apparatus and poles everywhere you look. Further back there is even more play equipment suitable for the younger kids including slides, diggers and swings.

Barbecues, impressive lookouts and a lovely grassed area complete what has to be up there for one of the best designed playgrounds in Australia. It will surely stand the test of time.

Carnarvon Foreshore, Carnarvon
It has a huge flying fox/seat type thing, what more could you want in life? The playground here isn't necessary big or flashy, but its nice location and simple yet inspiring equipment really resonates with your inner child.

The foreshore playground sits surrounded by grass next to the historic tram bridge in the Carnarvon inlet meaning there's plenty for parents to explore too while the kids run amok. Barbecues and benches aren't far away either.

Adult Playground, Katanning
Giant slides, giant rocking horses, giant everything. What this playground lacks in looks it makes up for in stature, and fun. The giant metal slide is the main feature and is a hell of a lot of fun, but beware, it can get hot in summer.

The adult playground in Katanning is an all steel equipment, grassed park beside a slow flowing brook in the inland Great Southern agricultural town. The shire are currently upgrading the park to make it safer and easier on the eye.

Mara Guthurra Adventure Playground, Karratha
Karratha is a city full of young families, and as such they need the outdoor spaces to match. The Mara Guthurra Adventure Playground in Baynton West offers just that.

Located on a large block of land which includes an oval, grassed area, school, nature space and plenty of barbecues, this playground is full of colour and unique challenges for kids of all ages, including adults when no one is watching.

There are flying foxes and bridges, towers and slides, swings and climbing frames... essentially the playground has plenty to keep the kids entertained while the parents relax around one of the many barbies overlooking the area.

Apple Fun Park, Donnybrook
There is no way the biggest playground in the southern hemisphere was not getting a mention in this list. Donnybrook is apple central and fittingly the playground tows the line in fitting the pink lady theme.

Apple Fun Park in Donnybrook is a colourful collision of slides, tunnels, swings and seemingly every other conceivable piece of play equipment. The park is always full of children after school and on weekends but given its huge size, there is always room for more.
