For many households, buying a real Christmas tree is a much-loved yearly tradition. When you walk into a home with a real Christmas tree, the smell hits you as soon as you walk in the door and (if you're not allergic!), it can become the comforting "smell" of Christmas every year. In Canberra, we are lucky enough to have two Christmas tree farms nearby to "choose your own", which makes the experience more fun and personal. If you have kids, the thrill of walking through the forest and choosing your own Christmas tree can become a treasured memory from childhood. If you love a real Christmas tree in your home each December, then check out the following venues and options around Canberra - in the quest to find the perfect one!

VISIT THE FARMS

1/ Santa's Shaped Christmas Trees have their own farm in Gundaroo, just over half an hour north of the city. Take a drive and walk through the forest and choose your own, with all trees under 7 foot costing $65. Ideally you will need to take a trailer and netting to cover it up for the drive home, however they can also be strapped to the top of the car, if you have a large car. Alternatively you can buy them online (and choose pickup or delivery) or buy them at their stalls at Bunnings Belconnen , the Capital Region Farmers Markets and the Southside Farmers Market in Woden. 2/ Christmas Tree Keng have their own 12 hectare farm in Bywong, also half an hour north of the city. Each tree costs $65 and they provide bush saws so you can cut your own down, or if you visit on the weekends they can help with the cutting. This carbon-neutral business pride themselves on the environmentally sustainability of their farm. An interesting point from their website states that one acre of Christmas trees produce the daily oxygen requirements of 18 people! See here for details and opening times. OTHER OPTIONS

3/ St Nicholas Christmas Trees can be found at the Capital Region Farmers Markets and the Old Bus Depot Markets each year, with prices starting from $60. If you're not sure how you are going to get it home, it is an extra $40 for delivery. See here for details.

4/ The RSPCA sell Christmas trees at their premises at Weston Creek, with all money raised going towards the animals in their shelter. Each tree costs $65 and if you visit on the weekends, there will be someone there to help you get it to your car. See here for details.

5/ The Christmas Tree Truck is a business here in Canberra which will deliver to you a real Christmas tree, set it up and then they will even remove it at the end of Christmas! Prices start from $125 for a 5 foot tree and up to $160 for a 7 foot tree. See here for details.
