Other than Hawaii or Cairns, where are the best places for kids when it's just too cold and miserable to play outside?

1. Questacon , of course! It's expensive, but for locals the annual membership is often worth it. Mini-Q is specifically designed for kids under five and is a lifesaver! Be warned, though, that on holidays and weekends it's very hard to get in, and sessions are timed.

2. The National Dinosaur Museum has loads of great animatronics.

3. Think outside the box and go swimming . CISAC Pool in Belconnen has paid parking, but in Winter it's easy to park near the door - and it has fountains in the kids' play area. Very few families think of swimming on a cold day, so you may get the pool to yourself - if you can brave the walk to and from the car.

4. Kid City and Monkey Mania are fantastic indoor playgrounds (quite expensive, but worth it).

5. Clubs are a surprisingly good source of indoor playgrounds, often for an annual membership of $5 and no obligation to buy anything when you visit. They're brilliant when other places will be uncomfortably crowded.
