The classic dinner and movie "date night" is a favourite with couples, at any time of the year. Every Saturday night around the world, couples are pouring over movie guides and deciding on
what they want to see,
where they want to see it and
when they want to go. Although years ago it was fairly straight forward to go to the movies, now we have a huge amount of choices with reclining chairs, surround sound, 3D, premium seating and the option of food and wine delivered to our chairs! If you want to go out for dinner afterwards, couples then have to decide which restaurant to choose - and in Canberra, the choices are endless!
Here are just 3 suggestions for dinner and movie date nights in, and around Canberra. So clear the calendar and enjoy spending quality time with your loved one this date night, Saturday night or Valentine's Day. A night of decadence awaits...
1. Palace Electric Cinema in the NewActon Precinct
This small cinema complex is ideal for a date night, as it is located in the architecturally-striking
Nishi building in the
NewActon precinct , surrounded by restaurants and bars. Palace Electric Cinema has 8 fully-licensed cinemas in the complex, so you can take a wine and cheese platter into the movie with you, for a romantic night for two. As well as the latest releases, they also offer art house movies, opera, ballet and a wide range of genres. The cinemas may not have reclining seats, but they are comfortable and new. See
here for details.
Afterwards, you don't even have to leave the building to walk upstairs to
Monster Kitchen and Bar for a nightcap or creative, inspired meal. The whole building has romantic, low lighting - which is actually a practical measure to meet the environmental standards of the building. The effect however, is sultry and moody. Alternatively, walk across the road and enjoy wine and tapas at
Parlour , with local wines, cocktails, dessert wines and a long drinks list to choose from.
2. Dendy Cinema in the CBD
This popular movie cinema is conveniently located in the heart of the CBD, on the top floor of the
Canberra Centre shopping centre. There are 11 cinemas to choose from with comfortable seating - however if you want a luxurious experience, to impress that special someone, why not book a movie in the
Premium Lounge and have reclining seats, a bar outside the cinema and food and wine delivered to your chairs! Tickets to the
Premium Lounge are more expensive, but it is a popular way to enjoy a special night at the movies. See
here for details.
Dendy Cinema is an ideal location for eating out afterwards, with some of the best restaurants in the city located just down the escalators to the ground floor of the Canberra Centre. The
North Quarter dining area features
Jamies Italian ,
Hero Sushi Train ,
PappaRich ,
Sammy's Kitchen ,
CBD Dumping House ,
Cream Cafe and Bar and many more. See
here for details. If you would prefer to skip dinner and just go for dessert, also look for

3. Hoyts - Belconnen and Woden**
Hoyts movie cinemas in Canberra are located at
Belconnen and
Woden and both have reclining seats and surround sound in all their cinemas. If you have had a long week, putting your feet up and watching a movie with a loved one on date night, is simply priceless. These cinemas can get quite crowded, so avoid the queues and buy your tickets online before you get there.
If you are looking for dinner before or after the movie, both venues have a
Rashays restaurant next to the cinemas,
Chong Co in the complex and
Grill'd burger joints nearby (check out their
movie and dinner deal!) See
here for restaurants at Belconnen and
here for Woden. If you are at Woden in particular, why not visit
San Churro Chocolateria and share a dessert after the movie, for a romantic end to the night. If you are trying to find
Chong Co and more restaurants in Woden, walk to the opposite side of the shopping centre, on
