Yes, you read right -
outdoor table tennis! It seems to be the "latest" thing in playground design, with colourful table tennis facilities popping up in parks around the Canberra region. When you discover them, however, it is a little disappointing that you can't play them straight away as they are BYO paddles and balls - so it is something that you will need to remember to take with you next time! A set will cost about $10 from your local Big W or K-Mart and then you are set for every family BBQ and table tennis championship this summer.
These fun venues are not just for the kids however, with many adults getting in on the action, with serious game-faces on and Olympic-grade smack-downs! If you are having a BBQ or picnic at one of these playground locations, ensure you BYO equipment so you can spend even longer at these modern and new family facilities. Who will be the ultimate table tennis champion in your family this weekend?
Out of the city...
Yerradhang Nguru Park and Gumnut Playground at Googong is one of our personal favourites, as it is very
pink! Although Googong is a fair drive from Canberra's city centre, taking 25 minutes, this brand new estate is an interesting area to drive around and try out new, modern playgrounds.
Gumnut Playground is the only one with table tennis tables however, so ensure you check this one out on your
playground crawl . The
two table tennis tables are situated near a free gas BBQ area and colourful playground, so stay awhile and drink in that fresh Googong air! See

Quean Elizabeth Park II in Queanbeyan is a new and colourful parkland by the Queanbeyan River. Nearby is a new
playground , splash park in summer, BBQ area and picnic areas on the grass. This shiny silver table tennis table is on its own, so you may need to share it with the local kids if they bring their paddles and ball! See

Gungahlin, north of the city...
Moncrieff Community Recreation Park opened in December 2017, so all the sporting facilities are still brand-spanking new. As well as the impressive children's
playground and sports facilities, the
two table tennis tables are a lot of fun and are also under shade, which comes in handy in the hotter months. This popular recreation area is the ideal place to take an esky full of food and stay all day, so the kids can tire themselves out trying to beat each other - and you! See

Franklin Recreational Park is another new and modern favourite, with sports equipment, colourful
playground , a skate bowl for the kids and
three table tennis tables, just waiting to be utilised! If you are going for the day, take the kids scooters, skateboards, basketballs, soccer balls, table tennis equipment and a whole lot of energy! See
