Winter is just the perfect time to visit a museum. Kids can be entertained and educated - all at the same time. What a bargain.

There are many museums to visit, however these are my top 6 picks for the mere fact that they offer kids programs, or something fun for kids to see and experience.

1. The Western Australian Museum — Shipwreck Galleries

Found in Cliff Street, Fremantle, the Shipwreck Galleries have created an awesome holiday event for all kids. The adventure begins with kids being stranded on Traitor Island. They will have to follow the map and clues to the rescue boat. At the end, kids can learn how to make a ship in a bottle. Activities range from $2.00 per child.

2. Western Australia Museum

Enter into an adventure of pharaohs with Western Australia's special event: Phantastic Pharoahs. Construct a pyramid, create an amulet, or learn to write hieroglyphics, plus many more. This event is designed for kids and is held over the July holidays. Admission to this event is $4.00

3. Western Australian Maritime Museum

Calling all yer maties! Maritime Museum is hosting Puppet Pirates. Make your own mini-puppet pirate theatre and characters for the Puppet Pirateers, or construct your own transparency to join the Shadow Pirates. Fees for activities range from $2.00 per child per activity and entry to the museum is $3.00 per child.

Railway Museum can be found on Railway Parade, Bassendean, Perth Western Australia. They are only open on Wednesdays and Sundays. Kids will be entertained with a range of trains and carriages stemming back to 1891. Great for kids of ALL ages. Fee for kids entry is $4.00

5. Fremantle Prison Museum

Fremantle Prison Museum is etched with eerie rumours and stories that would delight any kid. There is a range of tours you can choose from depending on the age of each child. Entry to the gatehouse is free and can quite easily entertain the kids if you are on a tight budget. There are fees associated with the tour, however if you have never been on a tour this is an amazing educational experience for kids of all ages.

6. Kalamunda History Village

Take a step back in time and see how people used to live and work – back in the days when there was no phone or electricity. Kids can see steam locomotives, the original post office, and many more. Kalaumunda History Village runs a holiday program; however you need to contact them directly for more information. Entry fee to village is $2.00 per child.
