These are my top picks for movies during May
Now that winter is fast approaching, the cinema is a comfortable and warm place to go for a few hours to get "away from it all".

This is a list of movies which will be screened during the month of May 2018 and they are for mature audiences.

1. BROKEN
This is a New Zealand movie to be released on 3rd May and is about an ex-gang leader who has to choose between "forgiveness or revenge" when his daughter is murdered by an old rival gang.

This story was influenced by a true story of a girl who was murdered by a menacing tribe in the mid 1800s.

It is the first film for the director and stars Josh Calles, Wayne Hapi, Ruby Grubb and Loupua Lavulo.

2. THE GATEWAY
This is for the science fiction lovers out there (including myself) and is about a particle physicist who transits to a parallel world to find her dead husband.

This is an award-winning Australian drama and goes on to tell how she finds a different version of her late husband, and all the problems that arise from this.

It stars Jacqueline McKenzie, Myles Pollard, Hayley McElhinney, Shannon Berry, and Troy Coward.

3. NT LIVE - CAT ON A HOT TIN ROOF
The vast majority of us have probably seen this classic starring Paul Newman however, this is a new version of Tennessee Williams' twentieth-century masterpiece starring Sienna Miller, from the National Theatre's 2018 season of live recordings direct from the London stage.

A family celebrate "Big Daddy's" birthday and the scorching heat affects this couple and threatens to destroy their marriage.

This film will premiere on 5th May and should be well worth seeing.

4. BROTHERS' NEST
This Australian movie, due to be released on 10th May is about two brothers' who plot a murder, however, things do not go according to plan.

This is a black comedy by the director of Kenny, and is the story of an inheritance and the problems arising out of this - it is sure to be a good laugh!

It stars Shane Jacobson, Clayton Jacobson, Kim Gyngell, Lynette Curran, and Sarah Snook.

5. CHAPPAQUIDDICK
Some of us will remember this from the news stories and this film possibly needs no introduction as it was in the news so often at the time. It is about Ted Kennedy and revisits his 1969 car accident with Mary Jo Kopechne and the ensuing cover-up.

This is another film based on a true story, which is due to be released on 10th May and stars Jason Clark, Kate Mara, and Ed Helms, amongst others.

6. CROOKED HOUSE
This film is adapted from an Agatha Christie novel about a private detective who solves a gruesome crime.

As with the majority of Agatha Christie's novels, this should be a fascinating mystery, and it stars such greats as Max Irons, Glenn Close, Christina Hendricks, Terence Stamp, and Gillian Anderson.

7. TULLY
Tully is a comedy about Marlo, who is gifted a night nanny by her brother. It tells about the nanny, Tully and the bond that forms between the two - watch this video to get a glimpse of this movie:

It stars Charlize Theron, Mackenzie Davis, Mark Duplass, Ron Livingston and Colleen Wheeler.

8. AN AMERICAN IN PARIS - THE MUSICAL
This is another old movie, which was so popular in its time and is a Tony Award-winning Broadway musical, inspired by the 1951 MGM film, and filmed live on stage at London's West End.

Featuring the music and lyrics of George and Ira Gershwin, this one is sure to be a winner and will be released on 16th May.

9. DEADPOOL 2
While this movie is possibly not for all tastes, I thought it still deserves a mention, as it is the sequel to the Golden Globe-nominated comic book action romantic-comedy about the foul-mouthed, murdering anti-hero.

A cafeteria chef survives a near-fatal bovine attack and wants to still fulfil his dream of becoming the hottest bartender while learning to cope with his lost sense of taste.

It will be released on 16th May and stars Ryan Reynolds, Josh Brolin, Morena Baccarin, Zazie Beetz, T.J. Miller, and Brianna Hildebrand.

10. THE BOOKSHOP
This is a drama about a woman who opens a bookshop in a small town against a lot of competition.

It will be released on 24th May and stars Emily Mortimer, Bill Nighy, Patricia Clarkson, Hunter Tremayne, Honor Kneafsey, and James Lance.

11. GAUGIN
This is the story of famous painter, Paul Gaugin and is set during his self-imposed exile in Polynesia in 1891.

While living here, he experiences feelings of solitude, endures great poverty and sickness, while at the same time he has a great passion.

I'm sure this will be a fascinating account of this part of his life and it will be released on 31st May.

12. METOPERA: COSI FAN TUTTE
While this movie is the only one for May that I am not interested in, I feel that there are many people who would like this Mozart's Cosė Fan Tutte, performed as part of the Metropolitan Opera's 2017-2018 season.

It was filmed live in HD on the New York stage and is Mozart's famous comedy opera, set in the 1950's on Coney Island.

This one will be showing at theatres from 26th May, 2018, and you can see a preview here:

All in all, May is going to prove a good month for going to the movies several times!
