When you think Mexico you think sombreros, ponchos, nachos, and, of course, tequila. So where does one go to enjoy all of the above?

1. Nachos Mexican Cantina

Found in Aspendale Gardens and also Mount Waverly, Nachos Mexican Cantina is your run-of-the-mill Mexican restaurant with an excellent array of traditional Mexican food. The staff are friendly and the place a tad whimsical with its vibrant colouring and warm atmosphere. If you didn't think nachos could get any more delicious, wait until you try their bacon nachos. It's a whole new level of Mexican dining.

2. Taco Bill

Found in a huge variety of locations (check out their website) Taco Bill, like the American Taco Bell, offers a great variety of food and an excellent vibe; however, their large 'fishbowl' cocktails are the main attraction. Grab one for yourself (if you dare) or share one between two. Their extensive cocktail menu ensures that there is something for everyone. Check out the Chapel Street Restaurant where you get a free sombrero with every fishbowl order.

3. Mexicali Rose

If you're looking for a more creative atmosphere try Mexicali Rose. Located in Richmond this gorgeous little restaraunt features vibrant red, yellow and green walls, a large bar, and a mini verandah decked out in Mexican themed bunting and fairy lights right in the middle of the store. Perfect for a date or drinks with friends their delightful attention to detail creates an eccentric and excellent backdrop for a great night out. Try their mango margarita, or if in a group a jug of their sangria. The Corner Hotel is also just metres away and makes Mexicali Rose a perfect dinner destination before seeing a gig.

4. Salsa's

If you're looking for a very low key Mexican experience, the small shopping centre chain store Salsa's offers a great starting point for the newcomers to Mexican cuisine. Found in most major shopping centres, their chicken burrito and nacho fries will make you a regular customer in no time. They also have great vegetarian options and the phenomenon of Taco Tuesday's, that is, 2 dollar tacos all day. Run, don't walk.

5. Mamasita

Located in Collins Street this urban Mexican joint guarantees you a good night out. The tiny space is wooden and eccentric and the tequila range amazing. The corn on the cob is covered in cheese and grilled to perfection. The vibe is unique and so is the crowd with the line often spilling all the way out the door and into the street. Their authentic and eco-friendly Mexican food tastes like its straight out of the country itself. Make sure you book early or pop in during the day when it's less busy.
