Getting your Thrift on in the City
Finding an op shop in the city is not as easy as it sounds but they are there and I hope this op shop guide helps get you to them.

The first four are in the CBD and the rest are in some of the surrounding suburbs.

1. City Hunter Gatherer
Royal Arcade Off Bourke Street Mall, Melbourne (03) 9650 1843
Opening Hours: Monday to Saturday 9.30am to 5.15pm
Small but packed with vintage, retro and quirky picks. Part of the Brotherhood of St Laurence op shops.

2. Brotherhood City Basement Store
Royal Arcade Basement off Bourke Street Mall, Melbourne (03) 9650 3011
Opening Hours: Monday to Saturday 9.30am to 5.15pm
It's a small but bustling store, not very friendly for prams or wheelchairs but this is more due to the old building and stairs. It offers mainly clothing with a small selection of homewares and bric-a-brac

3. Salvos Bourke Street
69 Bourke Street, Melbourne (03) 9663 7615
Opening Hours: Monday to Friday 10am to 6pm and Saturday 10am to 4pm
The Salvos website gives this overview of its city store "this boutique store provides a great variety of men's and women's clothing and accessories, from basics to designer bargains as well as a wide selection of books".

4. The Conscious Closet

Opening Hours: Tuesday to Saturday 12pm to 5pm
Funds from this great enterprise help support Fitted for Work. Their website describes the store "The Conscious Closet stocks a range of recycled women's fashion including designer labels, vintage, contemporary fashion brands, shoes, accessories and more!"

Located between Richmond and east Richmond Train Station

12. South Melbourne Community Chest Op Shop

A much loved hidden gem of an op shop. Proceeds go towards funding local community groups. Great prices.

13. South Port Uniting Care Op Shop

Opening Hours: Monday to Friday 10am to 5pm and Saturday 10am – 2pm
Raising funds for outreach services run via the church.

14. Richmond Bridge Road Red Cross Op Shop

Opening Hours: Monday to Friday 10am to 6pm, Saturday 9am to 6pm and Sunday 11am to 5pm
Voted Australia's Best Op Shop in 2015 this op shop is obviously well loved. It constantly has great window displays and a passionate volunteer crew.

18. Sacred Heart Prahran/Windsor Op Shop

This op shop has been operating on the busy Chapel Street for over 10 years now. It's a lovely big op shop with lots of furniture.

19. Prahran Mission Goodwill Op Shop

A great mixture instore with some room for furniture.

20. Vinnies Port Melbourne

The list is not extensive but if you are just visiting Melbourne and need an op shop fix I hope this helps.

Being a disability pensioner, I need OpShops to survive. Since they have become the haunt for the trendy employed people, prices have increased a lot, especially in the Red Cross Op Shops - to the extent that now pensioner persons like me can no longer afford them. Such a pity that a
societal necessity is now too expensive for the very people they are supposed to help.

The Salvation Army Store in Abbotsford is a good one
But the best Op Shop in Melbourne is Alkira in Box Hill
Prices there are the op shop prices and you are guaranteed a bargain.

Good 2 Go in Hosier Lane off Flinders Lane -!very inexpensive, run by Youth Projects, sells coffee and pastries too- a social enterprise training homeless youth.
