West Endís endless dining choices from $5
West End has a seemingly endless variety of eateries to delight the tastebuds. From cheap and cheerful to a bit more upmarket, there are cafes and restaurants that offer great value for money. Here are the top meal deals that I've ferreted out (starting from $5 - yes, you heard correctly).
POKE CO 84 Boundary Street, West End Tel: 0490 363 610 Website: pokeco.com.au Instagram: poke_co_
Don't let the unassuming shopfront fool you. This small Japanese takeaway bar has the tastiest poke bowls and rolls at reasonable prices.
What's the deal? The $5 hot dog rolls won't burn a hole in your pocket. The rolls are filled with salad, dressing and a choice of protein: teriyaki chicken, smoked salmon, marinated beef, panko katsu prawn or chicken katsu.
82 Vulture Street, West End Tel: 0404 173 027 Website: brisbanegovindas.com.au Facebook: facebook.com/WestEndGovindas/
Govinda's is a vegetarian restaurant featuring Hare Krishna cuisine. It is the second such restaurant in Brisbane, this one opening in West End in 2000 and enhancing the eclectic dining scene.
If you've lived in Brisbane forever, you may be aware of the original Govinda's restaurant that used to be on Elizabeth Street but has now relocated to 358 George Street. You may also remember when it was an all-you-can-eat buffet.
What's the deal?
The large feast meal for $16 is an aromatic and tasty spread of jasmine rice, mixed vegetable curry, kofta (also known as pakoras - savoury vegetable puffs), tomato and herb chutney, dhal, garden salad, and a dessert of halava (semolina) with custard or a vegan cupcake. You'll also get a house-made ginger mint drink.
If this sounds too much of a feast, there are smaller sized meals at $10-$12.
Tue-Sat 11:00am-6:30pm (closes at 7:00pm)
Closed on Sun & Mon
Vegetarian cookery books and Hindu texts at Govinda's.
