Welcome to the July issue of the Secret List. A list of fun, different and unusual things to do with your kids each month. July is the month of winter school holidays.

There is something for every family, no matter how old your kids are, where you live, and how much you have to spend. Why is it a secret? Because if your kids find out about all the things on this list they will beg you to do everything on it.

Winter is Coming (Jon) Snow and Ice
If your little Elsa tragics haven't quite got enough snow and ice then take them (and the rest of the family) to the Fremantle Winter Garden. What is sure to be a mammoth event during the month of July, the Winter Garden includes an outdoor iceskating rink, massive inflatable slide, carnival games, music, snowmen, a winter lodge and more. Entry is free but individual games and skating sessions are ticketed and should be booked. Not to be missed.

When: July 1- 26th
Where: Fremantle Esplanade
Cost: entry is free, skating sessions start at $8 for five years and under to $21 for adults

Slip Sliding Around
There is a definite theme this year with big school holiday events, and I blame Disney. This year The City of Perth will be having a massive snow slide right in the middle of Forrest Chase. Not real snow, of course, but fun nonetheless. There will be 12 sessions a day and it is totally free, but there is quite a complicated registration process ( click here for more info ).

As usual, parents miss out on the fun and get stuck holding the bags, but you can use it as a bribe to get the kids to behave for the next few weeks, so it's not all bad.

When: 4th to 19th July
Where: Forrest Chase, Perth city
Cost: Free

Try Defying Gravity (in Gingin)
If you are willing to make a day trip, the Gravity Discovery Centre in Gingin is offering daily programs during the July school activities. Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays are rocket making and launching workshops (please bring your own empty 1.25L bottle) while Tuesdays and Thursdays are Tower target days where you get to throw things off a 45m tower.

Call the centre on (08) 9575 7577 to find out more about the classes. Stick around and explore the centre: climb the tower and drop water balloons, take a walk through the solar system, and learn about the universe with the awesome science exhibits.

When: Monday 6th July to Friday 17th July, 11am-3pm
Where: Gravity Discovery Centre, 1098 Military Rd, Gingin(approx. 20 minutes north of Yanchep)
Cost: entry $18 adults, $12 children

Yanchep adventures
If you're going to travel all the way to GinGin to visit the Gravity Centre, then why not stick around and check out some of the school holiday activities at Yanchep National Park. On Friday 10th there will be two adventure caving sessions (8-10 years and 10-14 years) while the following week there will be fun educational sessions for the younger kids including BrilliANTS (4-7 years) and Workers of the Underworld (7-12 years). All sessions require booking by calling Nearer to Nature on 9295 2244 on weekdays.

Even if you don't want to book the kids into a session, don't forget that Yanchep has a huge range of activities including caving, historical buildings, walking trails and a koala colony.

When: Friday 10th July and Thursday 16th July, times vary
Where: Yanchep National Park
Cost: $14-$32

Won't Someone Think of the Children?
As if Kids Wonderland wasn't enough, now there is also another two day kid-tacular called Kids Funfest, and in case you weren't sure, it is 80 different attractions spread over four pavilions at the Claremont Showgrounds.

Activities include (take a deep breath): bouncy castles, show rides, petting zoo, circus workshop, sumo wrestling, sport inflatables (such as bungee jumping and basketball), zorb balls, and an 'iceless' ice skating rink. Plus LOTS more. I've run out of space.

The two days each have been divided into two sessions and tickets are on sale now. The showgrounds are easily accessible by train and your kids will love you forever.

When: Saturday 11th and Sunday 12th July
Where: Claremont Showgrounds
Cost: kids $25, adults $12

Science Fiction, Double Feature at Scitech
Kids never stop learning, so why waste the school holidays in front of the TV when they can be having a blast (and learning heaps – but don't tell the kids that) at the school holiday program at Scitech. For the littlies (ages 4-6 years) there are sessions on the science of slime, the science of light and what life is like in the rockpools

Older kids can attend similar workshops but they also have exclusive classes just for them including bridge building and survival workshops.

New this year is a food science workshop for all the budding Masterchefs who want to learn about molecular gastronomy.
Get online NOW and book so your kids don't miss out.

When: various times and days during the July school holidays (7th-16th July)
Where: Scitech, CityWest Leederville
Cost: classes vary, but range between $10-$18.

Like a Kid at a… Toy Fair
I'm going to go out on a sexist limb and say this is probably Dad-and-son territory (sue me!) but this toy fair is all about action figures, cards, comics, Star Wars, movie posters, stamps, bank notes and other collectables. May the shopping force be with you.

When: Saturday 11th July, 9am to 12noon
Where: Park Recreation Centre, East Vic Park
Cost: $2 entry, kids under 8 free
Click for more info.

Say Hi to Hi-5
Tickets are still available to the two Perth shows by kids uber-group Hi-5. If your kids love to sing and dance and wear crazy bold colours then this is the stage show for them. The show lasts for an hour and a half and has two sets, just enough for most kids' attention spans. Tickets aren't cheap though, so this is one for the real fans. Hiiiiiiii-5!

When: Tuesday 14th July and Wednesday 15th July
Where: Regal Theatre, Subiaco
Cost: $34.90 to $49.90

Christmas in July
There is a lot to be said for celebrating Christmas when it's cold outside. It certainly makes a hot roast more welcome. Sure, it might not snow in Perth in July so building a snowman might be out of the question, but if you have trouble convincing kids to eat turkey then tell them it's Christmas in July and make a celebration out of it. Sing some carols, bake some gingerbread and make snowflakes out of doilies.

When: any time in July (or perhaps Saturday 25th)
Where: your place
Cost: as much or as little as you want

National Tree Day
Get your wellies on and roll up your sleeves for some good muddy fun: it's National Tree Day, and an opportunity to take part in helping thousands of other Australians plant over a million native trees, shrubs and grasses. You can sign up for one of the many hundreds of official events, or you can just be a part of it at home. Get the kids outside and involved in the environment. At the very least, make them weed the garden.

If it's raining though, and you want to stay indoors, here are some fabulous craft ideas to help celebrate National Tree Day.

When: Sunday 26th July
Where: your place
Cost: free

Happy Birthday to Harry Potter's Mum
It seems pretty incredible now, but Joanne Rowling was initially advised to use the pen-name J.K. because it was thought that if kids knew Harry Potter was written by a woman, the boys wouldn't want to read it. And everyone has heard the story that her first book 'The Philosopher's Stone' was rejected by twelve publishers before finally being picked up by Bloomsbury.

Joanne is now one of the richest women in the UK and one of the world's most successful authors. It's an inspirational story and perhaps a good time to snuggle under the covers with your (older) kids and read them these great stories (at least the early ones).

And since we're really in a crafting frame of mind this month, here are some interesting Harry Potter related crafts , perhaps beyond the average five year old, but maybe the spider web cupcakes are an easy option.

When: Friday 31st July
