It's Autumn and a wonderful time to be in a garden. Even if you don't have one of your own, it's still a fabulous time to visit some inspiring garden centres. The cooler days make it the perfect time to renovate your outdoor space, turn over the topsoil and plant some veggies, or just sit with a cuppa and enjoy the changing leaves. So if you need inspiration to get going, drop by any or all of these ten garden centres. They all have the necessities - potting mixes and soil conditioners, fertilisers and flowers, pots and tools to help you along the way. They all have qualified and helpful staff, and they each offer a little something special that make them worth seeking out rather than just picking up a bit of potted colour from the supermarket or chain hardware store.

Honeysuckle Garden Centre, 500 Military Rd., Mosman
Winning the award for 'Best Retail Nursery' in 2016 and 2017 certainly speaks volumes. From disease and pest diagnosis to plastic pot recycling, to garden consultations and plant rental, this family-run business has high standards. Nothing is too much trouble for the experienced staff, and the compact land area they cover on busy Military Road is an oasis away from all the traffic.
Top Tip: - being an inner city nursery, they have a great range of shade-loving plants and hanging baskets, perfect for a small courtyard or balcony.

Eden Gardens, 307 Lane Cove Rd., Macquarie Park
The façade is bold and beautiful and hard to miss. Just near the entrance ramp to the M2 motorway, this ultra-modern flagship store boasts over one hectare of display gardens, an on-site restaurant ( Dragonfly) is available for functions, gifts and homewares, a children's play area, and art gallery. Entry is free and most areas are wheelchair accessible. Click here for more information.
Top Tip: - their range of rare and unusual plants, such as the carnivorous Venus Flytrap, Sundew and Pitcher plants is interesting and inspiring. Children will love them.

Four Seasons Garden Centre, 200 Forest Way, Belrose
Bulk landscaping supplies, ornamentals, a great range of seedlings, pots, fertilisers, plus genuine supplier of Ironbark firewood, Four Seasons has been in business since 1962. They home deliver to the northern beaches, north shore, eastern suburbs, Sydney CBD and the inner west. Entry is free and mostly wheelchair accessible.
Top Tip: - their range of water features is diverse including an interesting range of pots and sculptures.

Hidden Orient, 206 Forest Way, Belrose
If you want to fill your outdoor space with all things oriental to give it that 'Bali' vibe, then this is the place to come. A great range of furniture, homewares and ornaments are sourced from places such as Tibet, Java, Bali and Japan and include garden lanterns, buddhas, and teak day-beds. There's a touch of the orient in their plant range too. Entry is free and wheelchair accessible.
Top Tip: - an extensive range of Bonsai is available, plus there's an on-site Florist and range of backyard sheds.
Ph: 02-9986 3968
Hours: Open 7 days 9am - 5pm

Palm Land, 327 Mona Vale Rd., Terrey Hills
This family-owned nursery has 35 years of experience in garden design and advice and can offer on-site consultation, which includes a detailed costing plan. They can supply eye-catching tropical plants such as bamboo, cordylines, ferns, cannas, gingers, heliconias and bromeliads. The area is wheelchair accessible, plus the newly renovated Buddha Belly Restaurant is hidden on-site amongst the greenery. Check out their menu here .
Top Tip: - a great range of huge tree ferns and mature exotics is available.

Sherringhams Nursery, 317 Mona Vale Rd, Terrey Hills
Being attached to the ANL team (Australian Native Landscapes) means they have everything you need in the way of landscaping. From huge rocks to pond supplies, paving and plants plus the tools you'll need, their design team can help advise you on all aspects of the job to compliment the size and scale of your land.
Top Tip: - bulk supplies of soil, potting mixes, turf, rocks, and mulches, such as gravel and sand.

Wirreanda Nursery, 7 Wirreanda Rd, North Ingleside
The drive down to this peaceful nursery is probably what I love most. Jump off busy Mona Vale Road and suddenly you're amongst the bush. As I got out of my car today, a bush turkey wandered past, threw me a withering look, then proceeded to perch in a nearby gum tree. It's a family-owned and operated business and the staff here are some of the most experienced you'll ever meet. The plant range over five acres includes tube-stock right through to mature natives and exotics.
Top Tip: - check out their range of grass trees & their Easter Plant Sale
Ph: 02- 9450 1400
Hours: Open Mon-Sat 7.30am-4.30pm, Sun:9am-4.30pm, Public Holidays: 10am-4pm, Closed Christmas & Boxing Day

Bonds/Flower Power, 277 Mona Vale Rd, Terrey Hills
So this is part of the Flower Power chain, and as much as I like to frequent the independent nurseries, I always enjoy a visit here. The carpark is huge, the homewares range is attractive, and they have one of the best range of herb and vegie seedlings I know. Seeds & co is the cosy on-site café (5% discount for Garden Lovers Club members), and everything is wheelchair accessible.
Top Tip: - keep an eye out for their discounts, and there's a great children's playground right next to the café.
Ph: 02-9486 3222
Hours: Open 7 days 8am - 5.30pm

Parkers, 45-47 Tennyson Ave., Turramurra
This is one of my favourite nurseries (see my article 'Parkers of Turramurra' for more detail). Even if you don't have a garden, just come for a visit anyway. A peaceful ambience pervades the place, and the range of plants available is comprehensive.
Top Tip: - the outdoor seating of the on-site café is positioned where you can sit with the last afternoon rays of the sun on your back nestled amongst the ornamentals. There's always a lovely range of gifts to browse, too.
Ph: 02-9487 3888
Hours: Mon-Sat 9am-5pm, Sun: 10am-4pm

New Leaf Nursery, 224 Powderworks Rd, Ingleside
Another favourite of mine for their commitment to sustainability, (see my related article 'New Leaf Nursery', which provides more detail) vegie growing, children's garden education, and all things poultry. Recycled timber and a huge pile of mulch is left at their entrance, free to anyone passing by and keen enough to load up their boot. Raising their own chickens, ducks, rabbits and providing a petting zoo for children is a huge drawcard. There's a casual on-site coffee shop where you can keep an eye on the kids, or browse the books in the free library.
Top Tip: - buy a few chickens for your own and pick up some free-range eggs.
Ph: 02 9913 3709
Hours: Open Mon-Sat 9am-5pm, Sun: 10am-4pm

Happy planting!
