When I was a child in the UK, you could pretty much do one thing at the library and that was to borrow a book. Back then, a little ID card from inside the front cover was stored in a box behind the counter, until you brought it back. If you were late returning a book, you were fined. You could borrow the sum total of three books. Sounds primitive, maybe even prehistoric but despite that, it was all we knew, was well used and that's where my lifelong love of the library began.

Fast forward to 2020 and City of Gold Coast libraries amaze me with all they have to offer. Library members have access to nearly 1 million items to borrow, download or stream and there are many great things you can do with your library membership card.

Here are my Top 5 eLibrary offerings and they are all free:

1. Watch a movie or documentary on Kanopy .
2. Listen to an Audiobook with Borrowbox .
3. Learn a language using Mango Languages .
4. Read newspapers from around the world on PressReader .
5. Listen to music on Freegal Music .

How do you access all these things? Simple - for full membership, you can pop into your local library (with 2 forms of ID) and join. Library Membership is free to GC residents and ratepayers and there's even a temporary membership available to visitors.

Or currently (due to COVID-19) you can get temporary online membership, to access the eLibrary 24/7. Once you have a membership number, download the relevant App e.g. Borrowbox for borrowing an audiobook or ebook, sign in with your library membership number, search for the title of choice and you are good to go.

So what are you waiting for? You don't even need to leave home and you can watch Hunt for the Wilder People - best (in my opinion) New Zealand movie, read a National Geographic magazine – try the latest issue using PressReader, listen to The Yield audiobook with Borrowbox or read a copy of Half Moon Lake, learn Spanish with Mango Languages, listen to The Sapphires Soundtrack with Freegal Music or find your next read with Goodreads or Who Else Writes Like. If you have to isolate through COVID-19, all you need is an internet connection and a library membership and you can escape to different worlds through so many different mediums and .... have I mentioned they are all free!

Hats off to Gold Coast Libraries - one of Australia's largest public library services, for the depth and breadth of facilities they have chosen to deliver to their members. Check it out for books and so much more.
