  • Before Sunset: The Bank and World War I - throughout April
  • In the Reserve Bank of Australia Museum in Martin Place, the role of the Commonwealth Bank during WWI is detailed in the new exhibition, "Before Sunset".

A century ago, as thousands of Australians volunteered to serve, many would return with physical or mental scars. Others would never return. To ease their financial burden, civilians were encouraged to invest in peace loans, used to construct homes and provide training and rehabilitation services for returning soldiers, nurses, and their widows.

The Commonwealth Bank, government-owned until 1960, expanded to service this national initiative.

Photographs, documents and artefacts chart the progression of the bank during a crucial period in our history, creating the foundation for an institution which would become one of Australia's largest companies.

Visit the RBA Museum website for details.
