The
Tasting Australia food festival kicks off in the first week of May, setting the flavour of the month. Don't be fooled by the printed brochure which may leave you gasping at the prices to gourmandise with gusto at grand gastronomic events. Town Square in Victoria Square is where more affordable experiences can be found, and there are many free things to do in Adelaide and elsewhere in SA.
Fork on the Road , the travelling party arm of Renewal SA is coming to Victoria Square on Sunday May 1 with fine food and wine, you can follow a market trail at
Adelaide Showground Farmers' Market or learn about food production at
Losing the Plot . Head to the Tasting Australia website to search for all the free things to do with great food and wine.
Also recommended for foodies is the
Kodomo no Hi Japan cultural and food festival on May 1 ($2pp) and the
Barossa Cheese and Wine Trail ($50pp).
The folk at SA Tourism were so busy with Tasting Australia they didn't attend the government's forum on increasing
Heritage Tourism in South Australia . Despite SA Tourism's disinterest,
South Australia's History Festival will be a massively popular event in May, showcasing our heritage with hundreds of fun things to do in SA. (
NB not all free).
Tour a
disused silver mine , have an
afternoon of family fun at a former
asylum for the insane , or
head for the hills in Willunga - and enjoy some fabulous food and wine while you're there.
The popular History Day at the
old Adelaide Gaol is back again on May 22 - admission is just $3pp. Alternatively escape the city for a fun
Littlehampton History bus tour
If you haven't made plans for Mothers' Day yet, then the
National Trust Heritage Festival has some great ideas, including pampering her at Beaumont House.
Early booking is recommended for all festival events to avoid disappointment.

Markets are fantastic for free things to do, and we have two new markets in Adelaide for you this month. The
Little Black Market (1/5) and
Etsy Adelaide Upmarket Unley are both car park markets which you should see. In the country the
Meadows Country Market and the
Strathalbyn Market make it a pleasure to escape the city.
On Mothers' Day the
Flinders Street Market and
Market Shed on Holland make for an inexpensive outing with mum. She will love to browse the market stalls, and both markets have delicious foods to eat. Another market highly recommended for mum is the
Health and Wellness market , but that isn't until May 28.
We can't forget food fun for kids too - luckily the next
Museum Bites is coming up, where kids can learn how to make and taste Chinese dumplings.
It's hard to pass up a free lunch - especially with the chance to join Sophie Thompson on a
tour of the Anlaby Garden . But if all the talk of food is driving you to drink, then join us for the
May Science in the Pub .

A
charity high tea , and ideas to
celebrate the Cinco de Mayo festival in Adelaide continue the food theme in our fun things to do this month.
Swinging a sword at the
Gumeracha Medieval Fair on May 7-8 may encourage your appetite again, while a charity
walk on the Heysen Trail (22/5) certainly will.
More cultural types will enjoy a performance of
Musée Haut Musée Bas (a Day at the Museum), or dance to the
Hot Dub Time Machine at Thebarton Theatre. While you're in the western suburbs
explore the other events there .

Our writers recommend regular walks, but don't be misled by the
free tour of Adelaide Institutions - no correctional facilities are involved.
The
Semaphore to Largs coastal walk is rewarding at this time of the year, and you will see a good range of flora and fauna. While in Semaphore you can get your history fix with some
very unusual buildings too .
Spend a Sunday at the Port , watch for dolphins on
the Loop Path , grab a bite at the
Wild at Hart market while the children enjoy the activities for kids at the award winning
Harts Mill playground . It's all awesome in Autumn at Port Adelaide.
No matter where you are in Adelaide it's not hard to find fabulous food and wine. The
new Brklyn Bar is a winner, find
fab breakfasts on Pirie Street , head out to the eastern suburbs
for great coffee places , or check out the new
Sneaky Pickle restaurant . Finally, there are some really
great value meals in Adelaide that have to be tried to be believed.
