One of the things that I look forward to in August is the SALA Festival. It rather reminds me of February and the Fringe Festival, when we have such an overwhelming range of things to see and do. This year the South Australian Living Arts Festival is showcasing thousands of artists at more than 600 exhibitions in Adelaide and country areas, and you don't even need to be an art lover to enjoy many of the free things to do.

SALA in the Garden at the Adelaide Botanic Gardens is a good example - the free ATLAS cinema soundscape in the Bicentennial Conservatory will be amazing, but you'll need to be quick as it's only on for a couple of days.

Nebula Deluxe is another SALA event in the Botanic Gardens that will be awesome. Graze on gourmet grub, and wash it down with wine and cocktails while you enjoy some spectacular performances. Do book early because this unique event will be popular, even with an $80 price tag.

Although not a SALA event, the launch of the Australian Museum of Gardening at Carrick Hill in August will appeal to art lovers and gardeners. If you take children, the Carrick Hill storybook trail is free fun for kids too.

Of course some days are still too wet to enjoy outside. If so, why not go to the movies for the Gallipoli Film Festival on Sunday August 2? Or stay at home to visit the amazing castles of Adelaide, but bedtime is perhaps not the best time to hear the untold stories of Parkside Lunatic Asylum.

Your tax dollars have gone to work to bring you the Winterlicious Festival with lots of fun things to do in Adelaide's Elder Park. The ice skating is fantastic fun for kids and there's lots to appeal to adults too until August 9.

South of Adelaide there's free things to do and family entertainment at the Cove Community Celebration Day on Saturday August 1. Skip lunch before you go as there's a free sausage sizzle on offer.

August is a good month for new markets in Adelaide - choose from the Red Umbrella Market (2/8), a winter pop up Art Market (7/8), and the Ink Crush Illustration & Design Market (15-16/8).

Have you been to the new Brickworks Marketplace yet? It opened recently at Torrensville and is quite a contrast to the previous markets.

The SALA Festival has a huge range of free things to do in Adelaide and the suburbs during August. Choose from a photography show, an exhibition of flower paintings, traditional Korean paper craft (8-16/8), and several free events at the Adelaide Botanic Gardens.

Not Free, but Fun Things to Do

City Views From the Carrick Hill Gardens

The Carrick Hill house and gardens have always had a broad appeal, and their new Endless Pleasure - The Art of Gardens and Gardening exhibition will build on that. The Fire, Tools, Garden & Art exhibition in September will be great fun too, with a display of some of South Australia's oldest fire engines.

Music lovers will thrill to the Unley Symphony Orchestra Winter Concert on August 9, while thousands will flock to the Barossa Gourmet Weekend on August 15-16 to join in the fun at wineries like Whistler Wines.

Many of us have already forgotten about the terrible times that the people of Nepal have been though, but you can still help by joining in the fun at a charity benefit Quiz Night on August 15.

A Treasure Hunt for Nature on August 16 will be fun for kids and benefit the Nature Foundation SA while providing family entertainment for a day.

Finally if you need a few tips on how to make your garden look better, then Open Gardens Adelaide on August 29-30 lets you take peek at some of the best gardens around.

For some reason food articles seem to be even more popular in winter, and our writers have brought you the bacon on some new food and wine around town. Find out more about the Latvian Lunchroom, taste test the newest food truck in Adelaide, drool over the food photos from Cafe Palazzo, or get recommendations on the top wineries to visit in South Australia.

I have no idea how writer Steve Hudson finds the time to write his reviews as he always seems to be on the road. He's recently been on the hunt for Lost Towns of the Adelaide Plains, taken the Gawler Church Hill walking tour, and both the Colin Thiele Drive and the Dutton and St Kitts Historic Drive. You'll probably catch him at the Crystal Brook show too on August 8.

We have had a drier than average winter so far, but you can catch some magnificent images of South Australian waterfalls here. Or take some photos for yourself - bird watching at Kaurna Park.

Still looking for fun things to do in Adelaide? Hayley has more suggestions for you, while McLaren Vale has things to see and do and good family entertainment too.
