The New Story Wall at State Library SA

I'm writing this at the end of November and feeling completely relaxed about Christmas. Although we've seen the Pageant, I haven't noticed too many other signs of the seasonal rush yet - clearly I haven't been to shops in Adelaide lately. It may also be a fringe benefit of a cataract I acquired lately, but I hope to lose that soon.

As I trawl to find what's on in Adelaide, I've noticed that there are plenty of free things to do in December, but far fewer paid events. This month there's more markets in Adelaide than you could possibly fit in, so let's take a look at some other things to see and do first.

The amazing new Story Wall at the State Library of SA is perfectly timed for the summer months. It's a free event which is great fun for kids as it's exactly like going to an outdoor cinema. Every night the Story Wall tells amazing colourful tales drawn from the history of SA - highly recommended to visit.

Finders University open their new free exhibition Wunderkammer: The Cabinet of Wonders at their City Gallery in December. It's a unique exhibition that may be startling for some, but is a fascinating look at our relationship with animals.

Day Tours @ Adelaide's Z Ward

Over at Z Ward the National Trust is busily serving up a program of events to keep this amazing place open to the public. It will be a marvellous atmosphere for the new Light Painting Workshops, while you can now double up with 2 for 1 ghost tours of Z Ward and the old Adelaide Gaol. History lovers can once again take Z Ward day tours too, so all tastes are catered for.

Everybody loves a food festival, especially if it's a free event. Around 20,000 people went last time, so don't miss the next Adelaide Street Food Festival at the Flinders Street Market in December.

Twilight markets in Adelaide are becoming increasingly common, and the Semaphore Summer Twilight Markets are the newest arrival which are sure to be busy. Alternatively hit the Beachfront Twilight Markets, or the one-off Carclew Dusk Arts Markets. All of them have plenty of free family entertainment and fun for kids (especially at Semaphore beach).

The Ebenezer Night Markets are aimed more at the Friday night crowd in Adelaide CBD, with fun things to do and a great range of street food from market stalls.

Out in the 'burbs the Wattle Street Market is large and popular, and when you're in the country don't miss Kapunda Twilight Market or the Riverton Market. Riverton is a town in the Gilbert Valley, which has suffered badly in the recent bushfires.

The Adelaide Health and Wellbeing Market is a new market catering for people who like to pamper themselves bodily and spiritually - give it a try too.

Kids quickly get consumed with Christmas, and if they missed the Christmas pageant in Adelaide there is a backup option - a pageant at Blackwood. You will want to know where to find Santa too.

Carols by the Creek is an annual tradition in Mitcham in a beautiful park setting. Alternatively head for the Southern Community Christmas Carols (gold coin entry).

Of course to complete your quota of Christmas spirit you will need to know where are the best decorated Christmas trees in Adelaide. These days you needn't look far to find some really spectacular light displays too, one of the beauties of Christmas.

Outdoor cinemas in Adelaide are great fun for kids, and the Moonlight Cinema films make for great family entertainment. The main problem then is getting the little ones to bed afterwards!

A fantastic new Opals Exhibition has opened at the South Australian Museum, recently attracting royal visitors so you will be in good company.

Fans of Australian detective fiction have been queuing for the colourful Miss Fisher's Costume Exhibition at prestigious Ayers House Museum

Take a Ride at Platform 1

I've been to the Platform 1 Heritage Farm Railway and it was fantastic fun for kids during the daytime. But the warmer months are the ideal time to catch their evening Sound and Light Show. It's one of those fun things to do for "kids" of all ages.

Now that Cheltenham and Victoria Park racecourses are no longer in use, why not go to one of the country races in South Australia? We've got the full program set out for you. Otherwise stay home to enjoy the last of the Chick Flicks for the year.
