January may be long and hot but it doesn't need to be expensive. Here are some of the best free events taking place in Perth this month.

1. New Years Day Beach Party and Fireworks
Didn't quite make it to midnight? no worries, celebrate the New Year with the traditional New Year's Day community concert in Shelley with live music and entertainment, kids' activities and the first fireworks of the year. There will be two bars, twelve food trucks, a petting zoo and more.

When: Monday 1st January, 2018 from 3.30pm, fireworks at 8.30pm

2. Heath Ledger A Life in Pictures
Learn more about one of Perth's favourite son's, Heath Ledger, in this special pictorial exhibition. Following his stellar career and highlighting some of his most memorable performances, this celebration includes a display of some of Heath's more notable costumes, some of his awards as well as his own research journals.

When: all of January (except Tuesdays)

3. Free Laughter Yoga Workshops
You may feel like laughing when you see yourself in yoga pants, but did you know it's actually good for you? Join in these free weekly laughter yoga workshops every Thursday during summer and discover the many benefits of yoga as well as a chance for people to connect and explore new techniques.

When: Every Thursday during summer (started December 9th) from 6pm-7pm

4. Seaside Spectacular
Part of the Summerset Arts Festival (see below), the Seaside Spectacular deserves a special mention. Celebrating ten amazing years, the Festival with launch with a free family event including aerial acrobats, mermaids, lolly pop lyras, and more in this evening of magic and wonder. Pack a picnic and enjoy the sunset and be entranced by a mystical world accompanied by international jazz harpist Michelle Smith.

When: Wednesday 24th January 2018 from 6.30pm to 8.30pm

5. Summerset Arts Festival
As the weather heats up, so do the northern suburbs with the fabulous Summerset Arts Festival landing in late January and running until February 11th. Along with a number of ticketed events, there are plenty of free events such as Jazz in the Park, the Eco Faeries, and Noongar Language Workshops. Find the full line-up of free events here.

6. Free Events at Fringe World
Fringe is in town between January 26th and February 25th with an enormous line-up of mind-blowing events and shows. While most shows are ticketed events, here are a few free events and shows during January (and February).

7. Australia Day Skyworks
Perth's enormous Australia Day fireworks display, the Skyworks, sadly cancelled in 2017 after a fatal plane crash, will return in 2018 (without the preceding aerial show). This popular event brings hundreds of thousands of people to the shores of the river for the best free fireworks event of the year.

There will also be a massive Celebration Zone in South Perth with over 100 stalls and activities on offer including craft and food for everyone from toddlers to seniors from 3pm-7.30pm (for more info click here).

8. EAT A Fabulous Food Festival
Located in the stunning (and air-conditioned) surrounds of the Joondalup Resort, EAT is a festival of all things gourmet, and will showcase the beautiful food and produce of Western Australia, You will enjoy hot food, WA preserves and honey, handcrafted spices and baked goods as well as local beers and wine to help wash everything down.

When: Sunday 28th January from 10am to 4pm

9. One Day in Fremantle
The City of Fremantle presents its alternative to Australia Day, the 'One Day in Fremantle', a family-friendly, all-day concert and an opportunity for all Australians to come together and celebrate multicultural diversity. There will be performances by Kate Miller-Heidke, DJ Kevin Parker, Arnhem Land hip-hop artist Baker Boy and indigenous dance group Djuki Mala plus a range of family-friendly activities and events.

10. 6006 In the Park
If you love North Perth, you will love their free festival celebrating all the best things about the area, including a huge line-up of acclaimed rockers and musicians, welcome to country, food and drink, pop-up bars, bouncy castles, face painters and more.

When: Sunday 28th January, from 4pm to 9pm
Where: Woodville Reserve, Cnr Fitzgerald & Farmer Streets, North Perth
