Top FREE amazing events in Melbourne 2016 - most of which you probably have never heard of, but they do exist and best of all, they are free!

Some require bookings, some you can just turn up to, but in order to make it into this list, they are all free! Melbourne is known as a city filled with eclectic and exciting events and things to see and do over 2016. There are many events taking place around Melbourne that are completely free. From household and gardening events, through to the wacky and quirky events. I have put together a list that even the locals may not know are occurring and the best part is they are all completely free.

So You Think You Can Cook?
You get the chance to find out if you can cook in this fun and free cooking workshop from the chef of the Old Pepper restaurant! Your experience will begin with a trip to the Queen Victoria Market and then you will join a cooking workshop.
When: Saturdays from the 16th of April through to the 21st of May from 10:30 am to 12:30 pm. each day

City Terrace Gardening Workshop
For those who wish to learn how to grow their own vegetables in the city with very limited space. You will learn all sorts of tricks and tips on how to get your small patch of City Terrace producing food for you and your family.

Heartfulness Meditation Living By The Heart
A friendly form of meditation with no prior experience required to practice at home or with your work colleagues. You will join an interactive workshop and find out how to deeply meditate.

When: This event is being held on the 25th of September from 6 pm until 7 pm bookings are not required and the event will be held at the Docklands hub - 80 Harbour Esplanade, Docklands. Click here for website.

Featuring food and crafts from around the world including arts,crafts, clothing, jewellery and gifts.

Get Laughing
Surely a way to get your soul happy. Join a laughing session for a belly laugh, which they say will assist you to strengthen your immune system, boost energy, take the edge off pain and relieve stress.

When: The laughing club holds this event on the first and third Sunday of the month, 11am-11.30pm at Federation Square, Swanston Street forecourt. Click here for website.

Colouring In
Your children aged 3-10 years will love designing and drawing their own MPavilion at the drop-in Pip Dot Art and Colour Melbourne workshop. They will select one design from the workshop to be included in the first edition of Colour Melbourne, a colouring book made for children by children, which is set to be published in 2017.

Penguin Viewing
Most people know about Phillip island for Penguins, yet many do not realise you do not need to travel so far. A St Kilda Waddle (yes that is the correct name for a gathering of penguins) moved in in the 1970s and seems here to stay. They come in every night of the year, but summer is the best time to see them. There are volunteer guides on site during daylight savings. Click here for website.

Millionaire Hot Seat Studio Audience

If you've always wanted to be on TV, now you can - at least as part of a studio audience for 'Millionaire Hot Seat'. As an audience member you have the chance to win prizes too, including tickets to a taping of The Footy Show or up to $1000 cash. You must be 15 years or older to attend.

Myer Windows
For 60 years the Myer Christmas animated windows have given a much loved Christmas event for families to share in. The weeks leading up to christmas each year take in this great spectacle for the city's children (and adults).

Transitive Cycles
Barney McAll has createrd two specially-commissioned new works for the Federation Bells. In this spectacular riverside installation there will be 39 upturned bells that will come alive with musicians. Barney will also play the Federation Bells live. At the end of the concert, you will also have the opportunity to play the bells using the Federation Bells app.

Rumble Coffee Roasting Cupping Sessions
Every Friday afternoon you can satisfy your Java craving at Rumble for an informative coffee cupping session. You will be shown the various flavour profiles of the coffee bean. The word cupping means to thoroughly taste and assess various kinds of coffee - its flavour, aroma and mouthfeel.

Thursday Evening Ghost Tour
Melbourne's CBD is home to some scary places, including those of haunting and murder. Explore the bizarre past that is Melbourne. The tour starts on the steps of Old Treasury Building and ends on Flinders St, near the Banana Vaults.

The laneways of Melbourne have long been popular for the wall graffiti art throughout the CBD the most popular graffiti lanes in Melbourne can be found at Hosier Lane right in the heart of the Melbourne city near Flinders Street station Whist you can pay to do a tour through the laneway it is completely free to wander along yourself and take your own photographs. It is not an event but I believe it is worth a mention in this list as it is such a fun thing to do at anytime.
