The city of culture is also sure to impress with a variety of quality events that cost next to nothing; in other words they do not require a penny from you. These events are presented in date order, with the exception of the first location where many free events are rather ongoing - as opposed to being presented in order of preference.
1. Federation Square
This popular meeting and hang out spot hosts a variety of different cultural and musical events in respecting Melbourne as a multi-cultural city, and the great thing is that these events are provided on the house. There is always (in most cases) something going on at the main stage from a comedy show (as part of the Melbourne International Comedy Festival) to band performances. Free Tai Chi classes are also available on Tuesday's at 12:30pm. For further information on free events at Fed Square, please click
here .
2. Australia Day Celebrations and Fireworks
Federation Square took the main stage prior to the fireworks once again. Melburnians were wanting to hear more. Melbourne is also home to some great Australia Day celebrations that do not cost the earth. The 9pm fireworks displays are worth turning out for, and you can arrive closer to the last minute.
3. St Kilda Festival
This free celebration of Summer at around mid February is called the
St Kilda Festival . Expect quality musical entertainment along the area's foreshore with more than 60 different bands performing; along with extreme sports demonstrations, children's entertainment and dance activities.
4. Melbourne Food and Wine Festival
This up and coming annual event has some events that require a charge; however head to the event's
website and you will find a variety of different free events from cooking demonstrations and food tastings along the city; to foodie film screenings.
5. Melbourne Open House
It is great that there is no charge to open up sesame and come inside some of Melbourne's most fascinating modern and traditional landmarks for one whole weekend. There is a queue to go inside some of the buildings such as the Melbourne City Baths, however stick with it and it will be worth the wait. Welcome to the
Melbourne Open House in July.
6. 30 Days of Fashion and Beauty
In September every year, many top fashion and beauty retailers put on champagne nights and other events such as make up demonstrations. Think Priceline and you will also walk away with free make up advice and a goodie bag to take home with you. Further information can be found by clicking
here .
7. Queen Victoria Night Market
Expect to sample a range of food from different cultures; in a foodie celebration of Melbourne as a multicultural city. Wine from a variety of top quality Victorian vineyards is also available. Ensure that you have at least a free Wednesday night to explore and enjoy from mid November to the end of February. A great Melbourne summer with live music and entertainment at the
Queen Victoria Market .
8. Carols By Candlelight
The line up last year (at the time of writing this) was just amazing. This much loved free event attracts more than 10,000 Melburnians every year at the Sidney Myer Music Bowl. Enjoy a variety of different Christmas carol performances.
There are many other free events in Melbourne, however these events have been run successfully on a consistent basis, and expect a different experience every single year. Of course "the best things in life are free." Yes and to a degree. Live it up.
