Good Beer Week is back in Melbourne, bigger and better than ever, from 12th to 21st May 2017. Featuring more than 300 events in various locations across Melbourne and regional Victoria, Good Beer Week is recognised as Australia's pre-eminent beer event.

The good news is that there is a range of free (and low cost) events during the festival. I've scanned the program and selected five of the best free events for you to enjoy.

Battle of the Buskers

Four of Melbourne's finest buskers will be competing head-to-head in what's described as 'the ultimate busk-off'. Enjoy a Yenda beer (available for purchase), matched to each of the buskers, while you listen to these talented street musicians. Vote for your favourite busker on the night.

50 lucky people are being offered the opportunity to attend this event for free, so keep an eye on the Good Beer Week website for further details.

The Battle of the Buskers takes place at Whitehart , 22 Whitehart Lane, Melbourne, from 6.00 - 9.30pm on Thursday 18th May.

Family Day at Thunder Road Brewery

Thunder Road Brewing is hosting a family fun day from 12.30 - 10.00pm on Saturday 20th May. There will be entertainment as well as guided tours for the whole family, including the rare opportunity to visit the Thunder Road museum, which houses brewing artefacts, and a library of brewing publications dating from the 1800s. (Guided tours run at selected times during the day.)

For the adults, you can enjoy the 26 different beers on offer. There will also be a specialty beer brewed live on the day, which you may be chosen to help with.

You'll find Thunder Road Brewing Company at 130 Barkly Street, Brunswick.

Free entry.

Bodriggy's 3 Pointer Showdown

Bodriggy Brewing in Abbotsford is giving you the chance to shoot some hoops and win prizes. On offer is ten cases of Bodriggy's finest brew - you just have to dominate in their three pointer tournament.

The fun starts at 4pm on Saturday 20th May, at 245 Johnston Street, Abbotsford.

While entry is free, you do need to register. Click here for more information.

Canimal Carnivale

It's also free entry to the Canimal Carnivale, which takes place at the Cherry Tree Hotel from 1.00 - 7.30pm on Saturday 13th May.

Using the 'Canimal machine', you will have the opportunity to can up any of the 25 regional Victorian tap beers on offer, to enjoy later.

There will also be carnival games, including can-coconut shy, can skittles, the longest can snake, coaster throwing and dunk the brewer.

Feast on food including slow cooked, beer can infused meats.

The Cherry Tree Hotel is located at 53 Balmain Street, Cremorne.

Ballarat's Beers Through the Years

Ballarat is proud of its 'liquid gold', and has a long history of beer production.

Beers Through the Years will explore Ballarat's beer heritage through displays, performances and other activities.

Local brewers will be sharing their experiences and advice, as well as an 'event exclusive' recipe for craft beer enthusiasts. You will also have the opportunity to enjoy a range of local brews, including Red Duck and Athletic Club.

Ballarat's Beers Through the Years takes place from 10am to 6pm on Saturday 20th May (bar and brewers from 12 noon), at the Ballaarat Mechanics' Institute, 117-119 Sturt Street, Ballarat.

Entry is free (drinks available at special event prices).
