To find anything free in the Big Apple is difficult, but below are the top free attractions in New York City. It's perfect for those who want to explore this fabulous city without spending a penny.

See the ever-glorious Statue of Liberty up close off across the New York Harbour at the Ellis Island National Monument. The Ellis Island also contains an immigration history center where you can search records of 25 million passengers, immigrants and crew members who arrived in the U.S on New York Harbour between the years 1892 and 1924.

Test your basketball skills on a half-court match at the NBA store, where you might be fortunate to run into one of the WNBA or NBA star players who make frequent appearances.

New York is quite known for its fair share of remarkable churches. Take a tour in the gardens of the Cathedral Church of St. John the Divine and admire the 16th Century Flemish windows at the Riverside Church. Also pay a visit to St. Patrick's Cathedral which is known for its gothic architecture.

You can also enjoy the Sony Wonder Technology Lab and be overwhelmed with its high-tech products.

While gazing during your walk around the city, be sure to look for the Chrysler Building or Empire State Building. These attractions are classic examples of art deco architecture and certainly don't cost money. Simply stare or even take a few pictures.

Discover your inner animal as you meet a western gorilla or watch lions in their enclosure as you take a visit to the Bronx Zoo. They are free to the public every Wednesday.

Why not enjoy nature at the Brooklyn Botanic Gardens? From 10am to noon on Saturdays and all day on Tuesdays, go for an adventure. Also from 10am Wednesdays, the New York Botanical Gardens is free of charge.

So as you see, with simple planning, New York can still be fantastic without spending anything.

The Statue of Liberty is indeed free to visit -- but getting there costs money.

The ONLY way to get to the Statue of Liberty is via one of the licensed tourist boats from Battery Park. The Staten Island Ferry -- which is free -- does NOT stop at Liberty Island.

It is misleading to write that Lady Liberty is free, when it costs money to visit her.
