The Adelaide weather in July is about as cold and wet as it gets, especially in the Adelaide Hills. This may not be a problem if you come from
London , but for your average Aussie sun lover it can be a challenge. And during winter there are a lot fewer events happening around town too.
To compound the problem it's the school holidays again, and it is good to escape from the house and enjoy the outdoors. Most of us can't jet off on holidays to sunny Cairns, so I have put together some ideas for you. And don't worry - if you don't have children there are plenty of things to do for you too.
I have split my suggestions into categories - just pick which you need to read, and enjoy.

Playgrounds
Our writers have been busily checking out playgrounds about Adelaide to help you find something that matches what you're looking for. There are adventure playgrounds suitable for most ages in Adelaide's
north ,
east , and
south , while
Belair National Park in the Adelaide Hills
has one too . Of course don't forget the
Dunstan Adventure Playground . All free.
Skate Parks
Most Councils have installed at least one Skate Park for their youth, and many cater for a variety of activities.
Minkarra Park in Flagstaff Hill is a perfect example - it includes a skate park, BMX track, playground, shared use trails and a dog exercise area all in the one spot.
Mitcham residents have a free
skate park too which is popular with young people living south of Adelaide.
Check your local council website or find one easily on this skateboarding
web site .
Take a Break
I am always amused how children can enjoy playing outdoors without being cold during winter. But I really enjoyed a day trip to
Port Willunga on a cool winter day recently. There's plenty to do there, and the children were loving it.
If it's a weekend and you have time to spare, drive a little further to the
Myponga Markets too. They are under cover and there are plenty of
interesting collectibles to browse.
For more ideas, take a look at our suggestions to
escape the city . You'll feel like you have had holidays yourself.
Rundle Mall
From July 9-13 Rundle Mall will be holding a show -
Sleeping Beauty on Ice at 10.30, 12.30, 2.30 daily (with an extra show at 5.30pm on Friday). Check
their website for more details, and also see your own local shopping centre website too to find out what they are offering.
Local Councils
The City of Charles Sturt offers
school holiday activities , why not check to see whether your council does too?
Even More Ideas
This classic article is enormously popular and full of ideas for
what to do in Adelaide . And if your appetite is insatiable, try

Unusual Museums
When people ask about free things to do in Adelaide, usually the SA museum and the art gallery are the first suggestions that you hear.
But there are some smaller things hidden about Adelaide which you probably won't have heard of. I recently went to the free
Museum of Electricity which I enjoyed, and kids will too. Unfortunately it is only open on Tuesdays, so plan ahead.
The free
Army Museum is close to the city and open on weekends. Its realistic displays are suitable for a family visit too.
Near to the
Unley Museum is a free museum dedicated to
St John's Ambulance , tracing their history and dedication to helping others.
Adelaide arcade also has a small museum you can visit, find out
more here .

Special events
The Willunga Almond Blossom Festival is a huge hit with both adults and children. It runs from July 27 to August 3, although the highlights are on the Saturday and Sunday - don't miss the street parade.
Teenagers (and older) will want to check out
AVCon from July 12-14 with its fantastic costumes and characters.
On July 19-21
at the show grounds there are three events aimed at different parts of the family - the Tools & More Expo, Sewing, Stitching & Hand Craft Show, and MBA Building & Home Improvement Show. There should be something there to interest most people.
It's the 50th anniversary of the
National Railways Museum this year, and during the holidays they have got some great value entertainment for all the family. A circus train, rides for $3 on your choice of 3 trains, and
much more .
Other museums
How about a day trip to
Tailem Bend , with its incredible
Pioneer Village ,
museum , and even a
train graveyard . Unfortunately the train graveyard is not open to the public.
If you plan to visit the St Kilda
adventure playground , don't miss the
tram museum down the road. It will keep you (or the kids) transfixed for hours.
Sport and Fitness
Why not enrol your children in a sports camp in July? There are camps for
soccer ,
football and
netball , and it's something that many kids love to do.
If you're a little less energetic, try a
free walking tour exploring Adelaide's criminal past or other aspects of our history.
And finally, if technology does it for you rather than sport, then check out the fabulous free
Fab Lab in Adelaide. Learn how to be creative and make things quickly and cheaply - a great way to spend a cool day indoors.
