When you visit Wollongong next and are looking for something to do, why not check out these walks? They are not far from the CBD and are mostly flat with some being dog friendly. The walks are short, you can stop along the way or choose to go back. If you're feeling fit, do the whole walk and explore the full length of the beach.
Wollongong is known for the beautiful beaches, and three of these walks take in views of three popular beaches - City Beach, North Wollongong Beach and Port Kembla Beach.
WIN Stadium to City Beach and Harbour
This is a popular walk along the main beach in Wollongong. There is a path with water stations and access down to the beach. This beach is patrolled in summer but take care during the winter months. In winter only experienced surfers venture out.
You can start at WIN Stadium, which is at Harbour Steet. There is parking available behind the stadium with some street parking as well. The walk is 1.2kms, and at a leisurely pace it can take 15 to 20mins one way. Enjoy views of one of the lighthouses, the long stretch of beach and there are a number of cafes along the way.
Once you reach the harbour, you will see the Breakwater Lighthouse and a cafe and restaurant complex. Right in the middle of the harbour park along Cliff Road is
Levendi Cafe , the best place for fish and chips in Wollongong. Look it up, the reviews are fabulous. You can enjoy a coffee or gelato here too. There is seating available or sit on the embankment and watch the pelicans soar.
Wollongong Harbour to Stuart Park
If you want a longer walk, then keep heading north along Cliff Road towards North Beach. You can choose to walk along the beach path or on Cliff Road, but I recommend you stick to the path, the views of the rock pools are beautiful. Although, along Cliff Road, there are more great cafes if you still need more refuelling.
When you reach North Beach, a popular beach for cafes and beachgoers, you will find
The Pavilion Pizza Restaurant , the
Kiosk and
Diggies , all great spots for lunch or to grab an ice cream.
If you keep walking you will head towards
Stuart Park and
the Lagoon, both spots popular for picnics. There is also a restaurant named
The Lagoon , keep walking towards the end of the walk to find this seafood restaurant. By the time you arrive here, you will have walked 1.6kms in addition to the 1.2kms of the City Beach walk.
Port Kembla Beach
This beach is not as well known to tourists but it is still a beautiful beach. As the longest beach in Wollongong at 6.6kms, many locals enjoy the pool, kiosk and the rocks area. I have walked this beach many times and the southern end is popular with dogs and their owners. It is patrolled in summer and I spent many weekends enjoying this beach. It was never as crowded as City or North Beach. If you want a beach and a walk with few people around, head to this one.
Being behind the steelworks, there is an unobstructed view of the shoreline down to the south. The address is Olympic Boulevard and there is an Olympic size pool with three smaller pools for kids and toddlers. There is a large car park in front as well as some parking at the Surf Club up on the hill.
MM Beach Walk and Port Kembla Heritage Park
This is a well-kept secret and definitely a great walk if you like secluded areas. This beach is dog friendly and not patrolled, swimming is NOT recommended. This doesn't stop the local surfers though.
You can park at Port Kembla beach and walk north to reach this beach or park along Foreshore Road, there is plenty of street parking available. Keep walking along MM Beach and you will reach the Port Kembla Heritage Park. Here you will find the original master harbour facilities and a lovely cafe,
Lo Stretto . After your walk, I recommend you enjoy the coffee and food at this cafe as you enjoy the view out to sea.
These are only four of the many walks you can explore in Wollongong. Another popular walk is the one that connects from the Lagoon to
Puckey's Nature Reserve at Fairy Meadow Beach.
There are many more walks and bush trails to explore on the website
Destination Wollongong. This beach suburb has a lot to offer families, couples and tourists, come and visit soon.
