1. Desert Flower

The movie is a biographic portrayal of Waris Dirie. As a desert flower that blooms with utter beauty against the harsh conditions, so did Waris. Escaping from the confines of the nomadic life of the African desert, she shot to fame as an American supermodel and is the UN spokesperson against female circumcision.



2. Erin Brockovich
Running Time: 131 mins
The film tells the story of Erin Brockovich (beautifully played by Julia Roberts), a jobless single mother who self-appoints herself at the office of her lawyer. To test her, the lawyer hands her a case for Pacific Gas & Electric Company. Delving deep Erin, rather, unravels severe chromium contamination in the water supply which is being masked by the company. Single-handedly she accumulates proofs and witnesses bringing down the energy giant.



3. The Whistleblower
Running Time: 112 mins
The movie draws inspiration from the courageous story of Kathryn Bolkovac. A Nebraska police officer, Kathryn (Rachel Weisz) is recruited as a UN peacekeeper for a UK based company and posted in post-war Bosnia and Herzegovina. Braving all odds she unravels an ugly ring of human trafficking involving the company. But the silence of UNO costs her her job and she ends up knocking the door of BBC news as her last hope.



4. Silkwood
Running Time: 131 mins
Meryl Streep plays the title role in this critically acclaimed movie based on the life of a Karen Silkwood. A metallurgy worker in a plutonium plant owned by the Kerr McGee group, Silkwood becomes a labour union activist and follows her own instincts gathering evidence against the evil-headed managers who compromise workers' safety to meet the promised demand for plutonium. Mentally and physically tortured to shatter her courage, she finally pays with her life in an attempt to make the findings public.



5. Norma Rae
Running Time: 114 mins
It is the triumphant tale of Norma Rae Webster (portrayed by Sally Field) a cotton mill worker who breaks the norm and successfully forms the union after drawing inspiration from a New York union organiser.



A great addition to this collection would be the upcoming movie based on the fight for female rights- "Suffragette."
