We're going to need a bigger boat
Welcome back to the Secret List. A list of fun and unusual things to do with your kids each month. There is something for every family, no matter how old your kids are, where you live, and how much you have to spend.

Why is it a secret? Because if you kids find out about all the things on this list: they will beg you to do everything on it.

Warning: This month is HUGE!

Horse Play
The Melbourne Cup is not traditionally associated with kids, what with all the gambling and drinking and dangerously high heels. Four year olds also look quite silly in fascinators. So avoid the event and do something else with your kids that day. Here are some alternatives to watching the race. If you like horses, then maybe you can stage your own race in your local park and combine it with a picnic (don't forget the carrots). Here are some horses to colour in and some more fabulous horsey activities to do with kids.

When: Tuesday 1st November
Where: everywhere (but especially Melbourne where they get a day off!)
Cost: Free

Splash City

Splash City Pop Up Waterpark
It's back and even better and wetter than last year. With a new name, Splash City is the biggest pop-up in Perth and all the best rides are returning including the enormous (and terrifying) 'Drop' which at more than 22m is the tallest inflatable waterslide in the world. For little ones (literally they base entry to rides on your height) there are plenty of less terrifying things to do including an inflatable obstacle course, trampolines, toddler zone and Dinosaur Water Park. You can even hold birthday parties there this year! The hottest ticket of the year.

When: Opens Friday November 4th and runs all year
Where: Belmont Racecourse

Mt Lawley Christmas fete
Mt Lawley Christmas fete

Mount Lawley Christmas Fete
Christmas is just around the corner which means there will be more Santa's than you can poke a stick at. Not that I'd recommend poking Santa with a stick. The Mt Lawley Christmas Fete will feature the jolly man himself plus craft and market stalls, food vans, activities for the kids, camel rides, a bar and DJs, and plenty more. The evening will finish with traditional Christmas Carols on the lawn at St Patrick's Church and the lighting of the iconic Mount Lawley Christmas tree.

Be Thankful
Since Aussies seem to have adopted Halloween and various other American traditions, it will only be a matter of time before we start doing Thanksgiving here as well. It's best just to think about the most basic idea of being grateful and giving thanks. We shouldn't have to limit this to a single day every November though. Leave the frozen turkey at the supermarket and instead make a picnic or a good Aussie BBQ, sit the kids down and get everyone to say what they are most thankful for or try these gratitude crafts.
