Christmas Gift Ideas

Christmas is a timely reminder to spend quality time with family and friends but trying to buy the right gifts for this relative and that friend can be a challenge, especially when most department stores offer much of a muchness. Gift hampers from supermarkets don't come cheap either.

Fortunately for readers in Perth and Freo, the Fremantle Markets not only has a schedule of free Christmas events and performances but plenty of local talent offering unique or locally made Christmas present that differs from generic gifts. Not to mention the fact that the Markets has plenty of locally sourced produce for a delicious Christmas lunch and gourmet gift hampers.

Natasha and I chatted about what's interesting to see, try and buy over the festive season. Here's our Christmas Gift Guide at the Fremantle Markets:

For Her

Jewellery, clothing, accessories and cosmetics are sure winners when buying gifts for the lady or girlfriend.

The Fremantle Markets is home to several well-known jewellery traders who specialise in Australian jewellery including Zingara and Aussie Opals Direct.

Zingara which specialises in handcrafted sterling silver jewellery has been located in the Fremantle Markets for over 30 years. Aussie Opals Direct buy directly from a number of opal mines and miners and therefore is able to offer quality Australian opal at very competitive prices. They also have a wide range of beautiful south sea and freshwater pearl jewellery.

Buy her ethical and fair-trade clothes from Free Bird Clothing and Accessories as a point of difference. They offer hand picked products from all around India and Nepal including silk clothing, embroidered dresses, hand made felt hats and accessories.

Or perhaps she'd prefer some organic cosmetics, skincare and haircare made in Western Australia from The Honey Pot, Corrynnes Natural Soaps and Body Products and Bush Essentials.

The Honey Pot's products are made from a variety of Western Australia honeys and pollens produced in their own apiaries. Corrynnes has been hand making natural soaps and beauty products that don't contain any chemical ingredients for 15 years. Bush Essentials offer skin care products made with very high quality essential oils like jojoba, macadamia, vitamin E and lemon myrtle, patchouli, bergamot, lime and peppermint.

If you still can't decide, there's always Flowers For The Soul. You can't go wrong with a beautiful bouquet.

For Him

Receiving ties and socks year after year can get monotonous, even for a guy. Surely there are more interesting gifts for your man or boyfriend.

If he enjoys nature and the outdoors, the huge range of camping goods from J & K Energy House might result in a Blue Mountains walking trip or a camping adventure in the Southern Grampians.

The first thing kids think of when it comes to Christmas and presents are toys. Unfortunately most toys these days are electronic games and cartoon merchandises.

Fortunately the Fremantle Markets Toy Shop continues to sells old-style and quality wooden toys that are both fun and educational.

You can find a large variety of wooden puzzles for kids to exercise their minds ad learn skills with putting puzzles together. There are also wooden train sets, push-a-longs, pull-a-longs and mobiles.

Fremantle Markets also has a good selection of hand-made clothing and accessories for the little ones which are great as gifts. Select from the sweetest beanies at Little Beaneez to the vintage-style dresses for girls of six months to seven years at Lalaland, where all creations are handmade and stitched by a mother and daughter team using pure cotton fabric and vintage patterns.

Mums with babies or expectant mothers may also enjoy the cotton fabric carrying slings, hand made leather shoes and tie dyed baby wear from Snug as a Bug.

For Everyone

It is also Western Australia's largest Nyoongar Aboriginal Art Centre and all sales proceeds go directly to the artists who attend the store most days.

The fresh food producers, vegetable growers and food retailers in The Yard like Lawleys Bakery, Karutz Smallgoods, The Mousetrap Gourmet Cheese Shop and Clara's Wholefoods can supply a variety of quality meats, freshly-baked bread and dairy products to decorate your Xmas table and fill a picnic basket for a festive meal by the Ferris Wheel.

Without access to a DeliVino and Darriwill Farm, the fresh produce suppliers in the Fremantle Markets are the next best option when organising a gourmet produce Xmas hamper gift to rival the likes of Pacific Marketplace in Singapore and Ritz Carlton in Hong Kong.

For a typical Aussie-style Xmas seafood meal, Weststate Seafoods can supply a range of fresh seafood to re-create your own Melbourne Marriott Hotel Seafood Stack. There's little need to visit Kailis' or Cicerello's. If budget permits, there's always the mud crab. And don't forget the giant WA strawberries to complete your Xmas Day Lunch.
