Now I know that noodle bars are nothing new and that there are thousands around, but if you want one that is just a mile above the others, you have to try Top Chef.
So why do they stand out from the rest?
The range offers over 70 dishes from China, Malaysia, Singapor and Thailand and I have yet to find a dud option on the menu. Some of my favorites are the Seafood Mee Goreng, the Laksa (chicken or seafood), the steamed dim Sims and the special fried rice, but my family has tried several more options and they are all popular.
The ingredients are always fresh (no limp, sad looking Bok Choi here), and the sauces are well balanced and not overpowering. Anything that requires pre prep is made on site, so there are no frozen dim sims or wantons to be seen. For my taste one of the key differences though, is in the cooking. While I find many of these places impart a burnt flavour to their noodles and rice dishes, I have never found this here. It is always well cooked, but never overcooked or burnt.
Nothing is lost either in time or money for this quality, with Top Chef being comparable to all the other noodle bars I have tried over the years. Expect to wait about 5- 10 minutes for your meal, and pay about $5 for entrée and $10-$12 for mains.
As an added bonus if you hop on their website you can easily order on line (even for cash sales) and it will be ready and waiting for you when you arrive. This is a great option if you have a limited lunch break and don't want to waste time waiting for it to cook. They also do delivery between 5.30pm and 8.30pm every night for orders over $20. The really nice thing about this is that they use the same photos on the website that they use for their menu, so if you are not sure of some of the names, you can see what it looks like before ordering.
Sadly I have to report that Top Chef is closed and has been for a while now. The shop is still there at the moment but no one is collecting the mail and it has not opened it's doors in months. I have also tried to call a few times but no answer.
