Have you been charged with the important responsibility of planning an exciting adventure for your friends? Whether it's organising a bucks night or something a little more casual, all of those difficult decisions can paralyse a guy's ability to take action. Don't be lazy. If you go the extra kilometre to plan something awesome your friends will truly appreciate it. Here are our top seven picks for blokey things to do.
Paintball
Throw your tight-knit group into an indoor or outdoor
battlefield and compete for bragging rights. There's always that one friend who is just itching to paint a fellow team mate's backside for the fun of it. Depending on the number of players and where you intend to play, you can experience a variety of objective-based rounds like capture the flag.
Another classic game type is reminiscent of a bank heist where one team garrisons a fort overlooking a wagon full of money bags; the other team must work together to steal the loot without getting shot.
At the end of the session, when paintballs are running low, you may find yourself participating in the dreaded Mexican standoff. Fortunately, this is a rare scenario as there are other, safer, ways to expend your rounds when the game comes to a close.
In a Mexican standoff each team gives all of their remaining paintballs to one of their combatants. The two brave souls then stand back-to-back and must walk several paves apart. When they hear the signal to commence, each shooter about-turns and fires relentlessly.
After a game of paintball you will have loads of stories to share with your comrades.
PC Gaming at Guf
If getting bruised by paintballs doesn't sound like much fun to you then you can exchange virtual bullets with your chums instead.
Guf offer punters a fantastic setup for internet and local area network PC gaming. You can play whatever you like from massively online multiplayer titles to real-time strategy games to first-person shooters and more.
How long do you want to play for? An afternoon might be all the time you need but have you considered booking in for a lock-in? If the blokes are up for a night of gaming, you could make arrangements to clock in at 10pm and then game right through to 8am.
The staff are friendly and very helpful. If you want to play something that isn't already installed, given sufficient notice, the team at Guf should be able to accommodate your gaming needs.
Bowling
Are you looking for a more traditional and competitive past-time?
Bowling might be the answer you're looking for. Book a lane or two, put on those crazy shoes and aim for strikes.
If your group sink one too many gutter balls there's no shame in asking the establishment to activate the bumpers. Or, better yet, use a ramp so that you can bowl straight every time.
Laser Tag
Shoot your friends with
freakin' lasers . It's pretty simple. You get hit and your gun is temporarily disabled. Run back to your group and try again. In my experience you spend a lot of the game following the person who just shot you so that you can exact revenge on your nemesis.
You see a lot of people aimlessly wandering, waiting for the zapper to reactivate.
Sure, you can compare the points at the end of each round for each kill but does anybody really care about the numbers? Most of the time you just run around a dark labyrinth and constantly pull the trigger. At least, that's what I do.
There are other classes of laser tagger to be aware of. The camper is that annoying person who finds the perfect nook to snipe from. Usually these players are supported by at least two others to ensure that you never get close enough to oust the coward.
And then there's the soldier concerned with scoring objectives. Rather than shoot opponents, this cunning player blasts the base structures at every opportunity. This is the person playing the numbers game.
Lasers are awesome. Book a party and have fun.
Trivia Night
The term 'bloke' evokes an image of a bunch of men sitting around drinking copious amounts of booze. While I don't condone excessive drinking I do encourage a little intellectual stimulation with your moderated alcohol consumption.
Scope out your local pub to see what kind of trivia nights they offer. Other venues do run specialty trivia events for specific TV shows or themes. Be on the lookout and, who knows, you might find something that's relevant and of interest.
Strawberry Picking
There is nothing more masculine than picking fresh produce. Nothing! Get your hands dirty while collecting fresh strawberries and enjoy the scenery with the boys. Afterwards, you might consider making jams as a group or indulging in a manly picnic.
Fight Cthulhu
Gather your bravest and toughest investigators to take on the blokiest challenge of all time: defeat an Ancient One to save the world. Rather than set out to sea and risk upsetting the Deep Ones for real, play Fantasy Flight's epic cooperative board game,
Eldritch Horror .
