Australia Day, our national day, has long been a cause for celebration as well as reflection, and 26 January 2013 will be no different. Communities will be gathering all over Brisbane to share the experience of celebrating what we all value about living in Australia. At the following free community events you can enjoy fun games for all the family, the great Aussie sausage sizzle, and more solemn commemorations such as flag-raising and citizenship ceremonies. Take your pick, there's something for everyone, much like Australia itself.

[SECTION]Australia Day Festival South Bank[/SECTION]

The Australia Day Festival at South Bank is the official Australia Day event for Brisbane supported by both the Queensland and Australian governments through the Australia Day Council. This one has it all - flag-raising, entertainment from top Australian musicians and community groups, a 21 gun salute, an aircraft flyover and fireworks.


Where: South Bank Parklands, including the Cultural Forecourt and Piazza

[SECTION]Fish, Fun and Aussie Sun[/SECTION]

This is a real family celebration with a focus on games, activities, competitions and food. Queensland rugby league great, Darren Lockyer, will also be on hand in his role as an official Australia Day Ambassador. There'll be mud crab races, sand castle building, thong throwing and ice cream eating, as well as rides, food and market stalls and buskers.

[SECTION]Australia Day @ Government House[/SECTION]

Add a touch of history to your Australia Day this year. Queensland Governor, Penelope Wensley will throw open the doors and grounds of Government House to celebrate Australia Day. You can picnic under the poincianas in the grounds, take a guided tour of the house or gardens or enjoy the free musical entertainment. Refreshments will be available to purchase.


Where: Government House, 168 Fernberg Road, Paddington.
When: From 10 am to 3pm.

[SECTION]Moorooka Family Fun Fair[/SECTION]

Moorooka Lions Club is once again hosting the annual Australia Day Family Fun Fair. You can welcome some of our newest citizens at the citizenship ceremony or congratulate community achievers at an awards ceremony then settle in for displays by community groups, food stalls, face painting, peg throwing and Bollywood dancing displays.

[SECTION]Fort Lytton Australia Day Celebrations[/SECTION]

Brisbane's favourite fortress, the historic Fort Lytton, is also swinging into action on Australia Day. This event combines family fun and a sausage sizzle with a flag-raising ceremony, guided tours and cannon firings. What more could you want for an authentic Aussie experience?


Where: Fort Lytton National Park, South Street, Lytton.
When: From 10am to 4pm.
