Bega is a rural town surrounded by lush green rolling hills, dotted with lagoons, galleries as well as being surrounded with rich pastures and magnificent rainforests.

This township is rich in history and is long famous for its dairy industry as well as being home to the Bega Cheese Company which has been operating since 1899!



The list below features attractions to suit all ages, interests and budgets:

Art Galleries & Museums:
1. Bega Valley Regional Gallery is the only regional gallery between Wollongong and Bairnsdale that showcases a dynamic contemporary exhibition program. Click here for the website.



2. Spiral Gallery is an artist-run space hosting regular changing contemporary and innovative exhibitions. The gallery promotes established and emerging artists through an exhibition program reflecting a variety of media and styles. Click here for the website.



3. The Pioneer Museum is Bega's first hotel and was built in 1859. It is home to the largest display of framed, early pioneer photographs in New South Wales as well as displaying memorabilia, tools and equipment. Click here for the website.



National Parks:

1. Biamanga National Park is jointly managed by Aboriginal people and is a significant Aboriginal site filled with dramatic landscapes and places to unwind. Attractions include wild landscape of cascades, granite boulders, lush rainforest, Mumbulla Mountain, river gorges, walking trails and more. Nature Attractions:

1. Kisses Lagoon got recently restored in 2017 and it offers a spectacular natural attraction featuring significant re-vegetation, recreational facilities, interpretive signage, landscaping, walking path, wetlands bird-watching opportunities, picnic spots and more.



2. Brogo Dam is located within the Brogo wilderness area in the southern section of the Wadbiliga National Park and it is an approximate 30 minute drive from Bega. The National Park protects rugged coastal escarpment and plateau areas. Brogo Dam offers picnic facilities and a ramp to launch your canoe, rowboat or kayak. Power boats are also welcome. 3. Bega Valley Lookouts are located three kilometres north of town and feature breathtaking stunning views over the town and the valley.



Heritage & Historical Attractions:

1. Bega Cheese Heritage Centre is the perfect spot to enjoy good old fashioned country hospitality. The Bega Cheese Heritage Centre is a faithful reconstruction of one of the first buildings on the Co-Op site (1899). There is a museum which offers displays of how dairying has shaped the culture of Bega Valley as well as a wide selection of Bega cheese and other local Australian cheese for purchase. 2. Bega Heritage Walk features 17 historic landmarks that can be viewed on this short walk around town. It starts at the Bega Pioneer Museum and passes historic buildings that now have been replaced with more modern constructions, including the local cordial factory which was established in 1879 (now the Auckland Plaza and Balmain Bros), motor service which started in 1909 (is now Betta Electrical), and the impressive King's Theatre built in 1935 and is now replaced by a furniture store. 3. Rosevear Jewellers was rebuilt in 1904 and taken over by Rosevear & Hall in 1910. The building is listed on the Register of National Estate and features an elaborate Victorian shopfront consisting of two curved shop windows with oak panelling on either side of a central door, a fanlight overhead and chequered marble floor at the entrance. It is located at 165 Carp Street, Bega.

4. St John's Anglican Church was built in 1874 and made of brick with stone trimmings. It is positioned on the site of an earlier church dating from 1857 and designed by the noted Colonial Architect Edmund Blacket who was famed for his work on the Quadrangle and Great Hall at the University of Sydney. 5. St Patrick's Catholic Church and Presbytery was built in 1882 and extended in 1952, and behind it, St Joseph's Convent was built in 1891. They are part of a Catholic complex which includes the local school. It is located at the top of the hill on Newton Road, Bega. Click here for the website.

6. Court House was built in 1881 and is located on the corner of Carp and Gipps Street, Bega. It was designed by James Barnet, Colonial Architect from 1865 to 1890. It is a plain building of rendered brick with a veranda, timber posts and an attractive, decorative iron railing. It is listed on the National Estate.

1. Tathra is a seaside village and is well known for its famous Tathra Wharf which was built in 1862. It is home to a wonderful landscape, pristine beaches, national parks surrounding estuaries and more. 3. For the history buffs:

  • Prior to European occupation the area around Bega was inhabited by the Dyirringany Aborigines who were part of the Yuin Aboriginal language group.

  • Explorer George Bass explored the region after the survivors of the Sydney Cove walked through the area in 1797. Bass sailed up the Bega River as far as Jellat Jellat.

  • In 1861, Bega had a population of 625.

  • In 1862, the Tathra Wharf opened and it led to a dramatic increase in the sale of local produce to the Sydney Markets.

  • The Victoria Hotel opened for business in 1958 and the Family Hotel followed a year later.



  • By 1840s the town was known as Bega and the farmers in the district were raising cattle, sheep, corn, fruit and vegetables.

  • A telegraph line from Bega to Sydney was established in 1868.

  • In 1885 Bega became the first town in New South Wales to open a municipal gasworks.
