Spring is here and with the warmer weather comes the first of the big free festivals, not to mention a host of great markets and art trails across the city. This is the month for getting in the car and visiting parts of our glorious state.
This huge festival takes place across the whole of the month and consists of various free events for the whole family including art installations, walks, talks, native plant sales and plenty of free concerts. Check out the huge program for all the details.
Part of the National Ballooning Championships which will see hot air balloons from all over Australian compete for their national titles, the Balloon Fiesta is a free family friendly event that will have your heart soaring. With carnival rides, stage shows, games, market and food stalls and more, the highlight will be Balloon Glow, where grounded balloons all fire their heaters at the same time making them all glow.
This amazing event with over 50 talks and workshops is a great opportunity to learn about a range of incredible discoveries at UWA including driverless vehicles, rock art, virtual reality, biomedical research, cell science and more. Register now for your favourite workshops.

4. York Festival
When: from September 16th to October 15th
Where: various locations in York, about an hour east of Perth
The York Festival will take place over a whole month with various events bringing locals and visitors together at this gorgeous historic town. Events include the watching the entries in the hay-bale art challenge (Saturday Sept 16th), the great gold hunt challenge where families race off against each other in a foot race where you hunt for clues (Sept 16) plus plenty of music, art, markets and more. The Spring Into Armadale festival is so big is actually started last month, but it is now only beginning to gear up with a range of various events including the Open Studio Art Trail, numerous markets, acoustic music weekends, informative talks and nature events, a free skate clinic and more. Celebrate all things Scottish in this fabulous free family day in the hills. The Quilt Run will start the morning and will be a spectacle to watch. This is followed by a big day of events including highland dancing, Scottish Dog show, arts and crafts, bagpipe competitions, the Heavy Events, medieval fair plus plenty of Scottish food to taste and tempt (haggis anyone?).
Over three days, the Chittering Spring Flower festival will heave with the beauty of wildflowers and the excitement of a small town festival. There will be market stalls, quilt displays, arts and crafts, vintage vehicles and displays and more – as well as plenty of stunning floral displays, talks, workshops and activities for the whole family to enjoy.
8. Art Trails/Open Studios
Across the city, various groups of local artists will be opening their studio doors and displaying a range of artistic styles and mediums including ceramics, Indigenous sculpture, watercolours, textiles, steel sculpture, wood turning and more.

9. Perth Makers Markets
When: Sunday September 24th, from 9.30am to 3.30pm
Where: Heathcote Cultural Precinct, Applecross
One of Perth's biggest and best markets, the Makers Markets are full of Perth's top artisans, crafters and small businesses each providing local and handmade gifts, fashion, crafts and more.
