Astounding art
The Toowoomba Regional Art Gallery is a unique space for regional Australian artists to showcase their work and share stories of their methods, mediums and mastery.

Located in the heart of the city centre, the gallery features three permanent holdings and exhibits artworks by local and national artists. Guided tours, talks and a range of workshops to suit most ages are also on offer throughout the year.

At my most recent visit, the downstairs exhibits included contemporary collections from the State Library Victoria, indigenous paintings, sculptures and ceramics by Kim Walmsley, as well as Dan Elbourne's ceramics collection 'Permanence'.

Upstairs in the Lionel Lindsay Gallery, you are greeted by a central skylight of stained glass and lead lighting. Here you can immerse yourself in historical Australian art framed by ornate gold. The permanent holding includes works of oil paintings, watercolours and prints and will soon display intricately carved wood blocks by Lionel Lindsay himself, featuring magnificently detailed animals including various birds and cats. The woodblocks will be on display from August to October.

The Fred and Lucy Gould Art Collection includes many beautiful antiques and collectables from Europe and Asia

In the adjoining Bolton Reading Room, you can view some rare items such as maps, books and manuscripts.

In the Gould Galleries, there are gorgeous pieces of antique furniture, fine porcelain, carved ivory, paintings and glassware, generously donated by Fred and Lucy Gould.

Owned and operated by Toowoomba Regional Council, the gallery is a must-do for anyone interested in art, history and culture. The staff are friendly and only too happy to share their knowledge of the collections.

The venue is open Tuesday to Sunday with the exception of public holidays. Admission is free. For information on upcoming exhibits visit www.tr.qld.gov.au/trag

We'll keep this in mind next time we are up that way; it seems to have something for everyone.
