In the 'land of the long weekend' what can one do to amuse oneself on Labour Day? What exactly is Labour Day? In the Northern Territory it's known as May Day while Tasmania labels it Eight Hour Day. For Queenslanders, 2nd May will be a non-labouring public holiday.

Labour Day celebrates the initiation of the eight hour working day which first occurred in Australia in 1856. Stonemasons and builders' labourers ceased work to march from the University of Melbourne to Parliament House. A successful protest, which in current day form, reflects a little bit looser than an eight hour day.

Toowoomba holds an annual march, this year on 30 April beginning at the Toowoomba Railway, Railway St at 10:30am. The march finishes with a flag-raising ceremony and Family Fun Day at the authentic Irish Club in Russell Street. The Australian Workers' Union will pick up the drinks, food, music and events. The Irish play a significant part in Australia's history. You are welcome to join in with the march. Historic clothing may be part of the march. For further details see .
