After enjoying a delicious falafel wrap at Sinbads yesterday, I grabbed a quick takeaway coffee from the aptly named Toothpicks Cafe which is just at the base of the Royal Dental Hospital on Swanston Street in Carlton.

Toothpicks Cafe is open for breakfast, lunch and snacks, Monday to Friday, 6 am until 5 pm. I visited just before 1 and the cafe was full and buzzing with life. With wooden floors and deep orange lighting, the inside decor was great. There's outdoor seating too.

I saw hot meals and cold meals, sandwiches and slices, muffins and gluten free chips as I stood amongst several different lines of people leading up to a long counter. It was all a bit confusing. I wondered whether the drinks or takeaway meals were handled differently to other orders. When I asked a waitress where I should order from, I was accosted with "What do you want?"

The coffee, like my experience, left a bitter taste in my mouth.
